PhD OPPORTUNITY – The Role of Thermal Tolerance and Secondary Metabolites in the Increasing Dominance of Indo-Pacific Soft Corals (University of Plymouth)
You will conduct field-based controlled thermal experiments on dominant Indo-Pacific soft coral species at Coral Eye, Bangka Island (North Sulawesi, Indonesia), and will quantify physiological performance and changes in metabolite production under acute and chronic heat stress. LC-MS/MS metabolomics will characterise changes in chemical defences, while bioactivity assays and experiments with hard coral adults/larvae, will evaluate the ecological functions of these chemical defences. This integrated approach will determine whether thermal stress enhances, reduces or alters the ecological function of soft coral chemical defences.
This is a fully funded ARIES studentship covering tuition fees, a £21,805/year maintenance stipend at the current 2026/27 rate, and research/training support. A limited number of awards are available to international applicants with the international/Home fee difference waived.

FULLY FUNDED PHD STUDENT: Promoting Coral Recovery After Bleaching Events (CASE Project with Tropical Marine Centre) - University of Essex
Working in the Essex Coral Reef Research Unit aquarium and in collaboration with Tropical Marine Centre (a leading UK company in coral husbandry), you will investigate what makes corals more or less likely to recover after bleaching. You will use advanced, non-invasive imaging methods including light-sheet microscopy and optical coherence tomography to study symbiont dynamics inside coral tissue, developing your own imaging pipeline to track recovery over time. Using optical and chemical microsensors, you will measure how environmental conditions inside coral tissue influence symbiont growth, building an understanding of the external and internal factors that drive recovery. You will apply your findings to design new approaches to boost coral health following bleaching.
You will gain exposure to the commercial marine industry and receive training in coral husbandry from a leading company. You will learn how to design and perform experiments in a research aquarium and work with experts to apply and optimise live imaging methods and microsensor techniques for challenging organisms. You will gain experience analysing complex datasets, including 3D imaging data, and communicating science to academic and non-academic audiences.
For queries about the studentship, please contact the Supervisor, Dr Elena Bollati, at [email protected]

CORAL MATTERS MAGAZINE: Issue 4 (free download) - Brought to you by The Coral Reef Research Hub
Issue 4 of Coral Matters explores the growing pressures facing coral reefs and the different ways scientists are responding to a rapidly changing ocean. The cover story looks beyond rising temperatures to examine how climate change interacts with local threats such as declining water quality, nutrient pollution, sedimentation and disease, while a second feature explores whether turbid reefs could provide important clues to coral resilience. Together, they highlight both the scale of the challenges facing reefs and the importance of combining global action with effective local management.
