If you haven't listened to our episode with @dave.asprey on @thehumanupgradepodcast, here's what you're missing.
@dr.viveklal sat down to talk about something almost nobody is discussing: your lungs have their own microbiome, and it's in constant conversation with your gut.
They get into the gut-lung axis, why MMP-9 is becoming one of the pathways researchers are watching most closely, why antibiotics and mold exposure can reshape your lung bacteria for years, and why breathwork is one of the few things that's been shown to actually shift it back.
It's a deep, science-forward conversation, exactly the kind we love having, and a good listen if you care about respiratory health, inflammation, or just understanding your body's systems a little better.

It's Perimenopause Awareness Month, and new survey data shows more than 1 in 3 women in midlife aren't sure whether they've entered perimenopause themselves.
That gap makes sense once you understand what perimenopause actually is: not a single event, but the years the body spends transitioning toward menopause, often marked by increasingly unpredictable hormone levels. It can start earlier than most people expect, sometimes in the mid-30s, and last anywhere from a few years to nearly a decade.
Part of the confusion is structural. There's no blood test that confirms perimenopause. Instead, perimenopause is usually identified by a pattern: changes in cycle length, flow, and timing, paired with symptoms like disrupted sleep, mood shifts, or hot flashes that tend to show up separately rather than all at once, which is exactly why it gets missed.
The good news is that a diagnosis isn't the starting point. Tracking your cycle and symptoms for two or three months and bringing that record to an OB-GYN or primary care provider, asking specifically about perimenopause, gives a doctor something concrete to work with.
If this is a conversation you or someone in your network hasn't had yet, consider this your prompt to start it.

When a supplement label cites research, it's worth asking a simple question: what exactly was studied?
There are two different levels a study can happen at. Ingredient-level research looks at one ingredient in isolation, testing whether that specific component produces a particular effect on its own. Finished-product research looks at the complete formula, testing how all the ingredients perform together, exactly as they're taken.
Here's why the distinction matters: a supplement can contain an ingredient that's been studied on its own, without the finished combination ever being tested together. Knowing that one ingredient does something doesn't tell you how the finished formula performs, because a formula is more than the sum of ingredients that happen to be studied individually.
Finished-product research closes that gap. By studying the complete formula as a whole, it shows what that specific product is designed to support and how it actually performs when taken as intended, not just what one piece of it might do in isolation.
Both types of research have value, but they're answering different questions. It's a distinction worth knowing, because you're buying the formula, not the ingredient.

Probiotics can be formulated in different ways, depending on what they're designed to support.
A general probiotic is formulated to support the gut as a whole, covering the broad range of functions the gut is involved in.
A targeted probiotic is formulated around one specific gut-to-system connection. The strains are chosen and studied for their effect on that particular connection, your gut-lung connection, for example.
Both are examples of how gut science translates into formulation. Understanding the difference can help you think about what a formula is actually designed to do.
We'd love to hear how this factors into how you evaluate a supplement: does targeted formulation change your decision, or does general gut support cover what you're looking for?

Most respiratory support stops at the lungs, but the science tells a different story. 🫁
Your gut microbiome plays a significant role in regulating immune responses, reducing systemic inflammation, and influencing how your body reacts to allergens and environmental irritants.
When gut balance is disrupted, it can affect how your immune system responds throughout the body, including in the lungs.
This connection is known as the Gut-Lung Axis.
