What is the zeptoverse, and what could it tell us about dark matter? โš›๏ธ A Cambridge-led team of physicists, working at @CERN, have detected an ultra-rare decay of a subatomic particle known as a beauty quark. The results are at such tiny scales โ€“ trillionths of a billionth of a metre โ€“ that they could open the door to the zeptoverse, where new physics and subatomic particles could be hiding. โš›๏ธ CERN's 42-Year Particle Mystery Takes a Major Turn ๐Ÿ”ฌ For 42 years, physicists have hunted for a particle event so rare it happens just once in every 10 BILLION decays. Evidence appeared in 2015, but later measurements failed to confirm it. Now, CERN has detected new evidence of the elusive event, which could help researchers search for particles never seen before. the first living being to go into space was laika-a stray moscow dog.launched #otd in 1957 in sputnik 2.there were no plans to return her to earth, and she lived only a few hours in orbit. sheโ€™s been immortalised by having her own monument in moscow.

This Tuesday marks 69 years since Sputnik 2 carried Laika, a stray picked up off the street, into orbit on November 3, 1957. There was no plan to bring her home, and the cabin overheated within hours. In March 1958, Air Force crews at Patrick AFB here in Florida photographed her capsule still circling. Every crewed launch since owes her something. I'll be thinking of her this week.

No major polar vortex breakdown this early has ever been recorded. Not since records began in 1959. The earliest so far: November 28. Now the European model gives a reversal around November 4 a 96% chance. MIT's Judah Cohen: "almost undoubtedly, the largest, earliest disruptionโ€ฆ on record." Same weeks, the Pentagon is reportedly preparing every major US base to run 90 days off the civilian grid. The Geophysical Event never announces itself. It arrives with "unprecedented" events until a tipping point is reached!

Which moon is bigger than a planet, and which one hides an ocean? Our own Moon is far from the biggest. Ganymede, a moon of Jupiter, is wider than Mercury, and Titan almost matches it. Galileo found the four large moons of Jupiter in January 1610 with an early telescope, and that was the first clear proof that not everything circles the Earth. Spacecraft later showed how different these worlds are: Io is covered in volcanoes, Europa may hide more water than all of Earth's oceans, and Enceladus shoots its ocean out in geysers. Discs here are drawn to the same scale, with simple sketches for the surfaces. Which of these would you most want us to land on?
