They’ll gather in public if you give them a good place to do it" - Jan Gehl #RethinkMaleCity
Mobility is multimodal.
When streets are designed for vehicles first, people are forced to adapt — stepping over bikes, waiting in traffic, squeezing through danger.
A walkable city isn’t about slowing cars. It’s about letting everyone move!
Walkable cities = healthier cities.
Fire and flood are Malé’s most common hazards.
Flood incidents cluster in specific areas — notably between the Old City and the Reclaimed Area.
Repeated risk highlights the need for targeted resilience, better infrastructure, and safer land-use decisions. #RethinkMaleCity
Healthy cities allocate 30–35% of land to roads.
Malé has just 16%.
Greater Malé runs 119,472 vehicles against a sustainable capacity of 89,413.
Malé’s streets can efficiently support only 16,515 vehicles.
Mobility needs rethinking.

How walkable is Malé ?
Within a 200m radius, we mapped schools & mosques, key daily destinations.
But while access exists, capacity doesn’t.
Schools enroll 26,819 students for 20,678 seats.
Cities must plan for people, not just maps.
