Barry Bonds reveals why Greg Maddux was the toughest pitcher he faced during his career
"The best, I think, technician pitcher was Greg Maddux. Maddux was the best technician."
"Greg Maddux knew the philosophy of hitting at the same time I understood philosophy of pitching. And Greg used it very well to his advantage."
"Power pitchers are power pitchers, they're going to go to what they go to no matter what, and that's power. And eventually, that's going to catch them, because you don't have to do much, they generate the power so the ball goes further."
"It's those finesse technicians that you that really can break things break you down if you're not smart."

Faced AJ Burnett a few times in 2010 & 2011. He was a ho-hum 92-95 with the FB and 81-84 with the CB. His FB was unique in that about halfway to the plate, it jerked to the armside (& sometimes up). Paired with the CB that took a hard gloveside & down break, the FB was electric. Very tough at bat.
1. You had to not only honor the FB in zone, but you also had to self preserve in case he missed up and in (which he was known to do).
2. You had to stick in there for the CB. (He also threw a high 80s changeup).
3. He also kind of looked slightly crazy on the mound.
The combination of fear/stuff/movement all came together to make a very uncomfortable at bat for hitters, especially righties.
Not everybody was/is AJ, but pitchers can do various things to be effective besides throw hard. Watch hitter reactions to pitches to get a read on how the pitcher's stuff is playing, not just the radar readings and spin metrics.

"San Diego GM Kevin Towers was trying to contact Rickey Henderson at a nearby hotel.
He knew Henderson always used fake names to avoid the press, fans, etc.
He was trying to think like Rickey, and after several attempts;
He was able to leave Henderson a message. Rickey had checked in under Richard Pryor. Rickey called Towers back and left the following message:
"This is Rickey calling on behalf of Rickey. Rickey wants to play baseball."
During Rickey Henderson’s first season with the San Diego Padres, Rickey boarded the team bus and was looking for a seat.
Steve Finley said:
"You have tenure Rickey, sit wherever you want."
Rickey Henderson looked at Finley and said:
"Ten year?
Rickey’s been playing at least 16, 17 years."
Rickey Henderson was an everyday player from 1980-2001.
During that time span, he stole 1362 bases.
During that same time span, the entire Boston Red Sox team stole 1322 bases. Bring back those uniforms!!!
