4 years ago today, I was about to do something that, unbeknownst to me, would dramatically alter the trajectory of my life. I wrote a mea culpa, to renounce my support for Trump; my governor, Ron DeSantis; and the MAGA movement. With my hand on the mouse, and the arrow hovering the "publish" button, I felt, simultaneously, dread and exhilaration. In that moment, I harkened back to my time as a volunteer on the 2016 and 2020 campaigns; all the MAGA and KAG hats I owned; my aspirations as a MAGA pundit; how I had referred to Democrats as malignant communists and socialists, worse than the Nazis; my myriad hours consuming MAGA media; and my talks at Trump groups I sponsored and supported. Most of all, I thought about my second family and my community in MAGA, and all the accompanying belonging, camaraderie, kinships and gatherings. Months prior, on the day of the Uvalde, TX, school shooting, I had quietly left MAGA. But something continued to gnaw at me; I had always been unapologetically public in my support for Trump and MAGA, and I thought I needed to reciprocate that by publicly repudiating the lies, falsehoods, conspiracy theories and extremism of MAGA politics. I pressed the "publish" button, not for attention, but for reasons of catharsis---to unequivocally turn the final page of the MAGA chapter of my life. I never thought that anyone would care; it turned out, however, that people did care. I received one desperate message after another from those with friends and family in MAGA, asking how they could extract their MAGA-identified close ones from the movement. Although I wasn't quite sure what, it was then that I knew I was on to something. Borne from this was Leaving MAGA. Today is my Leaving MAGA-versary. For those of you in MAGA having doubts, for those of you who have left, and for those of you with friends and loved ones in MAGA, know that you are not alone. You have a new home and community with us here at Leaving MAGA. When I left MAGA, I reclaimed my individuality, my agency and my empathy; leaving MAGA was good for my soul, my psyche and my mental health. I became a born-again human being. The same awaits those who leave. Every day is a stellar day to leave MAGA.
