In the next few years people's disposable income is projected to fall.
But what if there was a magic way to reverse this, at no cost to the government?
That's exactly what hitting Britain's housebuilding targets would do...
... - as our research shows. After 5 years of hitting the targets, a two bedroom flat in Lambeth would be £251 a month cheaper than otherwise.
You can find our full research here:

And it's in today's Financial Times too.

What if the best way to reduce the cost of living also turned out to be the best way to boost growth?
In a new paper for @BritishProgress, @timleunig, @robblackie & I find that the Government hitting its housebuilding targets would *reduce rents by £251 a month* in London, within 5 years.
This is a far greater saving for ordinary households than any cost of living measure announced in the Budget.
And the best part? We can do this for free. By streamlining planning restrictions, improving building safety rules and empowering residents, we could hit and exceed Labour's housing targets.
BUT as things stand, the Government's housing targets are not on track, and so households across the UK will not feel this benefit.

I have written something new on housing! A @BritishProgress report by @robblackie @dc_lawrence and me shows hitting the govts (low) London housing targets would lower rents by £250, compared with otherwise. That is big! 1/2 britishprogress.org/reports/…
Can we make it cheaper to live in London?
Today I’ve published research on how we can cut rents in London - by an average of £251 a month for a two bedroom flat in Lambeth.
How? By meeting England’s housebuilding targets.
Everywhere in the UK also benefits from more housebuilding - for instance a typical 2 bedroom flat in Sheffield will be £32 a month cheaper - compared to a roughly £4 savings from the government’s recent cut of VAT on fuel.
