What an amazing milestone for the team at HekaBio K.K. and our partners Alpha Tau Medical!
Getting a shonin approval for a new category medical device in Japan is a special event. On average, there are 12 of these given out per year.
This shonin approval is even more rare. Apart from several cases of near-simultaneous US and Japan approval based on multi-regional clinical trials, we believe this is the first time a foreign new category medical device has been approved in Japan before both the US and the EU.
Japan is indeed open for business. The authorities have demonstrated that they are serious about deregulation and breaking new ground, and our team can make it happen. We’re grateful to everyone involved for your partnership in achieving this milestone.
🎉 We’re proud to announce that Alpha DaRT (Diffusing Alpha Radiation Therapy) has received regulatory approval in Japan, marking the first approval outside of Israel for this innovative solid tumor treatment.
HekaBio led the approval process and will be responsible for launching Alpha DaRT in Japan, bringing a new treatment option for patients with unresectable or recurrent head and neck cancer.
A meaningful milestone for patients, clinicians, and our teams.

4 Insights from San Francisco: Our CEO, Rob Claar, and CFO, Deron Wolfe, recently attended the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference 2026 (JPM26) in San Francisco, one of the most influential gatherings in global biotech and healthcare. The energy and discussions there sparked several reflections on the state of our industry and the opportunities emerging, especially for Japan.
1. Optimism for Deals
Optimism was the word of the week in sunny San Francisco. Licensing deals are at an all-time high; M&A is up; private funding is recovering; public financing is very strong and the IPO window is expected to open. Everyone we met was enthusiastic to get their deals done in 2026, and so are we!
The timing is excellent for us at HekaBio K.K. as we’ve just opened our Series B fundraising and are initiating commercial activities in Japan.
2. AI Realism
We seem to have emerged beyond the period of hype when only AI companies could attract investment. At the same time, we have more practical applications of AI available for a broad range of development and business processes.
At HekaBio K.K., our primary use case is streamlining our filtering and diligence of the 200+ innovations we analyze each year for in-licensing consideration. Coming up, we will also employ solutions for patient identification and enrollment for clinical trials in oncology and neurodegeneration.
3. China Resurgence
The focus is now on China for the remarkable speed and cost performance of clinical development, and for the quality of assets. China has now surpassed the US as the leading source of worldwide licensing value.
We came out of JPM feeling a need to sharpen our focus on China for asset opportunities and for inclusion in multi-regional clinical trials. It makes a lot of sense to synchronize a US, Japan and China trial in order to seek multiple approvals without adding cost.
4. Japan Opportunities
We are always talking to US-focused emerging biopharma and MedTech companies about the value of Japan, and JPM26 was no different. There does seem to be more interest in Japan this year, and it’s not only coming from cultural appreciation or positive tourist experiences.
There is more awareness of and curiosity about the availability of large scale non-dilutive grants from the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED). We also had people ask us about the Act on the Safety of Regenerative Medicine (ASRM) which enables some cell therapy programs to launch under patient-pay prior to regulatory approval under certain conditions.
Japan continues its efforts to deregulate and rationalize in order to solve the drug and device lag, which opens up attractive opportunities for overseas companies. If you have questions on Japan, we would be happy to hear from you.
We wish everyone an impactful and rewarding 2026!
