Very well reported story on how new Starbucks in Urumchi stands on property confiscated from a private Uyghur company during mass internment / incarceration campaign a few years ago. Taken and sold at auction to a single state company bidder. kozet.org/starbucks-urumqi-s…

On 11 August, I visited the Secretariat of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) in Istanbul and had the pleasure of meeting H.E. Secretary-General Kuban Omuraliev and his colleagues.
We spoke in Kyrgyz and Uyghur—both Turkic languages—and discussed Japan–Central Asia and Japan–Caucasus relations, as well as the updated Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) framework, for over an hour.

A former Chinese police officer has come forward with firsthand testimony and photographic evidence of what he witnessed supervising Uyghur forced labor in cotton fields.
Conditions worse than prison. Refusal met with threats of detention. The CCP told the world these practices had ended.
Thank you to Dr. @adrianzenz and the @VoCommunism for making sure it cannot stay hidden.

A very important rebuttal to the piece by @vijayprashad and @t_ing on the situation of Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims in the Uyghur region of China. There is no source on the left more authoritative on the history and present situation of Uyghurs inside China than @Dave_Brophy

It’s true that these issues don’t particularly impact the substance of the piece. But the substance is as flawed as the referencing - e.g. this gross minimization of the scale and nature of incarceration in Xinjiang. “Several people”? And all for “violent activities”?
Errors often happen with citations for several reasons, carelessness being the most frequent. Now, with the apparent ease of the internet and artificial intelligence, these blunders can creep in at much higher rates. We apologise for the errors in some of our citations, which have been now corrected on the @monthly_review website:
Barring a correction to one paragraph, none of these faults alter the article itself nor blunt the force of our argument, behind which we stand 100%.

I had some issues with the politics of this piece. But as I read into it, I encountered some issues with its sources as well. For example, the authors cite a “landmark essay” from 2019 by the Chinese intellectual Wang Hui 汪晖. But I can't find the essay they refer to.
Tings Chak and I from Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research write the Review of the Month in the April issue of the journal Monthly Review on "The Idea of the 'Uyghur Genocide' and the Realities of Xinjiang". We end with a consideration of the need for politics in debates around ethnicity. See our essay here, monthlyreview.org/articles/t….
