This may sound strange or counterintuitive but it really makes no difference if Hurricane Isaias is a high-end, category 2 or low-end, category 3 at landfall. It’s all about the impacts. ⬇️ The difference in IMPACTS and what actually happens in those two scenarios is negligible. Both are very serious situations. The 5 mph wind difference in 110 mph (category 2) versus 115 mph (category 3) makes very little difference in what you get in terms of damage. I prefer to focus on impacts, which will most likely be greatest closer to the northwest Florida and Alabama coast. Depending on the exact future track, bigger impacts possible inland too. Don’t focus on the category, focus on the impacts.

🚨New: With data added from more states, we now estimate that about 2 million fewer kids are receiving SNAP in the wake of deep cuts enacted in last year’s Republican reconciliation law. Overall, more than 5 million people have lost SNAP since July 2025. cbpp.org/research/food-assis…

Our new report out today highlights the additional challenges that rural communities will face with Medicaid work reporting requirements. These problems will NOT be addressed by the rural health transformation fund nor will the woes of rural hospitals. ccf.georgetown.edu/2026/09/1…
Some hospital leaders are avoiding the fund meant to help them weather the cuts to Medicaid. More on the future of rural care in the latest installment of our new series, Unraveled: statnews.com/2026/09/14/rura…

Usually, we'd also be getting new data on the prevalence of food insecurity around this time. But the Trump administration abruptly terminated the government's 30-year annual food insecurity report shortly after the President signed the deepest SNAP cuts in history into law.

"Why can't states just get their SNAP error rates down?" ask policymakers who voted to cut federal funding *in half* for staff, technology, and everything else states might conceivably do to improve payment accuracy

The SNAP cost shift is *already* taking food away from people. As states have scrambled to reduce errors & lower their costs, some are making it much harder for low-income families to access SNAP — and denying benefits to eligible families altogether doesn't count as an error.

Update: We now have data from 22 states showing how many fewer kids are receiving SNAP in the wake of deep cuts enacted last year. In just those 22 states, 1.1 million fewer kids are receiving SNAP. Nationwide, that number likely exceeds 1.5 million kids. cbpp.org/research/food-assis…

These are some of the people who have been "moved" off of food assistance in the wake of the Republican reconciliation law's unprecedented SNAP cuts. The immense hardship these families are now facing is not, in fact, "a pretty big win." nytimes.com/2026/07/20/us/po…
Rollins: "For those who love work and celebrate work and want people to work and not be on food stamps, it's a pretty big win when we've moved 5 million people off food stamps, y'all."

ACA enrollment has dropped in every state, except New Mexico. What's special about New Mexico? They are the only state to fully replace the extra federal premium subsidies that ended this year.

Diminished capacity at USDA is already having an impact. Implementation guidance on the major SNAP changes in the reconciliation law has often been delayed & incomplete. Without the details they needed, some states incorrectly cut off benefits for people who were still eligible.
I’ve been following the USDA’s effort to relocate many of its DC-based employees to 5 cities across the country. Here’s what I’ve found. - Both current and former employees say. “no one was asking for this.” - Employees and their unions have made it clear that they would rather quit than relocate, about 80%. They all see this as an attempt to downsize the department. - Several former senior employees I spoke with are very concerned about the possible brain drain the department could see if the moves go through. There are a lot of interesting moving parts here, I break it down with @EricM_Katz and @AlmsNatalie in our latest for @washingtonsun notus.org/agencies/usda-mand…

a lot of people don’t realize the dust bowl wasn’t a natural phenomenon. it happened when agrobusiness interests dramatically transformed the plains without regard for drought, and created vicious dust storms that choked whole families to death. that’s what i think of when i read about data centers.

No one should be waiting 8 months for help they need & are eligible for. But understaffed states now face huge new costs if they mistakenly give families too much or too little in SNAP — while delaying or outright denying benefits to eligible families doesn’t count as an “error.”
One year after President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill tightened eligibility for food aid, the number of Arizonans on food stamps has plummeted by half — a loss of nearly 500,000 people, including about 200,000 children, according to state data. wapo.st/4gqs1ic

This plan's reported failure to address the emergency unfolding across the country is unconscionable. 4+ million people (including 800k kids) have already lost SNAP, far more than many expected. Congress must delay H.R. 1’s huge shift cost shift to states. politico.com/live-updates/20…

Secretary Rollins tells the Senate Agriculture Committee that “no one wants kids to be hungry.” In just the 12 states with available data, the number of children receiving SNAP has fallen by more than 700,000 since the deepest SNAP cuts in history were enacted in H.R. 1.
