Most national and regional seed policies sideline farmers' seeds in favour of commercial seed interests. Yet, Article 19 of #UNDROP recognises farmers’ rights to save, exchange and sell farm-saved seeds. Mr. Hakim Baliraine, a small-scale farmer from Mayuge and National Chairperson of @ESAFFUG, questions whether existing policies truly protect small-scale farmers and the seeds they sustain. The upcoming 1st Eastern Africa Indigenous Seed Conference offers an opportunity to shape policy pathways that uphold farmers’ seed rights. ▶Catch full episode on ESAFF Uganda TV: youtu.be/r1QkQ1N3Dvk?si=X8CB… @hekseperworld @1000currents @Sida @OxfaminUganda #IndigenousSeedsEA2026 | #SeedSovereigntyNow

In Teso Sub-region of Uganda, small-scale farmers are turning to indigenous sorghum, Edei-Edei, to sustain production amid prolonged dry spells. At the 2nd #NationalAgroecologyFestival, these farmers shared their experiences with indigenous seeds, showing how Farmer-Managed Seed Systems (FMSS) preserve local knowledge, safeguard crop diversity & strengthen communities’ capacity to adapt to climate shocks. But resilient seeds need resilient markets, too. 📰Read their story: nilepost.co.ug/agriculture/3… @hekseperworld @1000currents @Sida @OxfaminUganda #FarmerSeedLab | #SeedSovereigntyNow

In his closing remarks, Serere district Deputy RDC Mr. Anthony Nseko commended @ESAFFUG for advancing agroecology, improving community health and strengthening climate resilience. He called for greater investment in school-based agroecology programmes, and collaboration with local governments to sustain these efforts. “You may think of local food as just local food, but it is a vast project that is handling and solving very many issues. The food will give us everything. Diseases shall be prevented, and we shall improve the health conditions of our communities while saving government resources that would otherwise go into treatment.”- He said. @noradno @OxfaminUganda @1000currents @humundi_ong @hekseperworld @Sida #NationalAgroecologyFestival | #AgroecologyNow

“Food security means that there is enough food in my house. But then another question is: Is it safe? Will I have it tomorrow? What is the nutritive value of this food? How has it been produced?” In her welcoming remarks at the 2nd Annual National Agroecology Festival, ESAFF Uganda National Coordinator, Ms. Nancy Mugimba, challenged participants to look beyond food availability and consider food safety, nutritional value, sustainability and how food is produced. Her message underscores the importance of building food systems that not only feed people today but also safeguard their health and sustain livelihoods for the future. #NationalAgroecologyFestival #NAF2026 #AgroecologyNow @noradno @OxfaminUganda @1000currents @humundi_ong @hekseperworld @Sida
Turmeric, millet and amaranth: local crops with diverse uses! 🌾 Aguti Proscovia of Amorata Farmer Field School in Serere District is showcasing turmeric and millet at the National Agroecology Festival. Turmeric is widely used as a spice and natural food colouring, while millet and amaranth are valued as food crops. Aguti also presents a millet-based product made with amaranth seeds, highlighting opportunities to combine locally grown ingredients through food processing and value addition. Her exhibition brings attention to the knowledge farmers hold about their crops and the possibilities for turning local agricultural produce into diverse food products. #NAF2026 #NationalAgroecologyFestival #AgroecologyNow @noradno @OxfaminUganda @1000currents @humundi_ong @hekseperworld @Sida @esaffug

Middlemen often take advantage of traders and small-scale farmers. But exhibitions like this help people learn about new and emerging trade opportunities, current market prices and potential buyers, enabling them to earn fairer returns from their farming efforts.

𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁𝘀. Across East Africa, small-scale farmers and agroecological enterprises produce diverse, value-added products. Yet, this effort does not always translate into better incomes when farmers struggle to reach the right buyers and secure fair prices. We want to bridge this gap. We are hosting the #AgroecologyProduceExhibition and Trade Fair, bringing producers, traders, buyers, processors and consumers together to showcase their products, build market linkages and unlock new trade opportunities. @noradno @Afsafrica @1000currents 🗓️ 7th October 2026 #BetterMarketsBetterIncomes | #AgroecologyNow

In Serere district, climate variability, rising pest pressure and unstable prices are making it harder for small-scale farmers to grow and benefit from indigenous crops such as Edeidei sorghum. In response, @ESAFFUG, through the Rooted in Diversity (RiD) project, is equipping these smallholders with practical skills to grow their crops amid climate shocks, including training them to prepare and apply biopesticides, while working with partners to strengthen access to markets. ▶️ Watch: @noradno @oxfamnovib @1000currents #FundAgroecology | #FarmersSeedLab

The Winners | 4th Edition of the #AgroecologyPoemWritingCompetition And what a finale it was! Congratulations to the winners at both primary and secondary school levels, and to every young poet who took part in the 4th Edition of the National Schools’ Agroecology Poem Writing Competition. From school, district and regional stages to the national finale, these young people have used poetry, creativity and spirited performances to explore agroecology, healthy food systems and environmental stewardship. A special appreciation goes to the teachers and schools who nurtured these young talents, and to @ESAFFUG and its partners and sponsors for creating this platform, supporting the competition and making the experience memorable through the prizes, learning opportunities and takeaway gifts. The poems may have reached their final stage, but the voices, ideas and lessons shared today can continue far beyond the competition. Here’s to the young poets and the future they are already helping us imagine. #YouthInAgroecology | #FundAgroecology

A healthy diet is more than having enough food. According to keynote presenter Benard Bwambale, it should be safe, diverse, nutrient-rich, affordable and sustainable, while being low in sugar, fat and salt. He highlighted the importance of cereals, legumes, fruits, vegetables, animal-source foods and safe water in building nutritious diets. But creating access to these foods also requires food systems that support local producers and protect the environment. From creating markets for local farmers to promoting energy efficiency, tree planting and composting, sustainable food production can deliver multiple returns for communities. Integrating these approaches into schools can help learners understand the connection between what they eat, their health, their communities and the environment. @Esaffug @humundi_ong @FundAgroecology @Sida @1000currents #AgroecologyPoemWritingCompetition #YouthInAgroecology #FundAgroecology
