Surprising how much of the current foreign policy debate in the Republican party is just "reformed" neoconservatives trying to replace one world-spanning ideological crusade (democracy!) with another (civilization!)
.@SenMarcoRubio may have just handed Tehran one of the biggest propaganda gifts of this war and planted a deeply damaging narrative in the minds of Iranians who once viewed America favorably, potentially shaping their perception of the U.S. for generations to come. Reaching back 2,500 years to invoke Xerxes and the burning of Athens to frame a contemporary war isn’t just lazy history. It’s dangerous politics. Ancient empires fought, destroyed, and conquered one another. Including Alexander's burning of Persepolis. Dragging that into today’s conflict explains nothing. It just reframes this war as a civilizational clash. And that plays directly into Tehran’s hands. For years, the Iranian government has struggled to convince its own people that the U.S. is not against the regime, but against Iran itself. @marcorubio framing makes that argument for them. Even many Iranians who despise the Islamic Republic are deeply proud of Iran’s history and identity. Foreign attacks and civilizational rhetoric don’t win them over. They push people away. So instead of isolating the government, this kind of rhetoric helps it rally around nationalist sentiment and resistance. Whatever the intent, the effect is clear. Washington is helping Tehran sell a story that it could never fully sell on its own: That the United States is at war with Iran itself. At a time when Washington has yet to provide a full public accounting of the strike on a school in Minab that tragically killed more than 168 people on the first day of the war, including 120 children, when 1000s of Iranians have been killed, dozens of Americans have lost their lives, hundreds more have been wounded, and ordinary Americans are paying the economic price of this war, Rubio's attempt to reach back 2,500 years to invoke a clash of civilizations is a stunningly misguided diversion. Rather than answering the most urgent questions why the United States went to war, what it has achieved, and how it justifies the enormous human suffering and destruction it has inflicted- he seems to be searching ancient history for a moral framework to explain a war whose present-day consequences demand accountability. The question is not what Xerxes did to Athens 2,500 years ago. It is what the United States is doing to Iran today, why it is doing it, and who will be held accountable for the lives destroyed in the process.

"based on the condition of their Diesel Refineries" is a message to Ukraine about where US interests lie on this issue - with Moscow. And US interests, more properly understood, are Trump's and the GOP's political fortunes in the mid-terms.
The President of the United States has announced, with obvious pride, that he phoned Vladimir Putin and asked him for fuel. He calls it a great success. It is the richest country on earth going cap in hand to the man who bombs Ukrainian cities every night, because diesel became expensive before an election. For four years Europe paid more for its energy, housed millions of refugees and emptied its arsenals so that Putin would not be rewarded. Washington has now concluded that all of it matters less than a cheaper tank for a truck in Ohio, and has told Ukraine to stop hitting the refineries that pay for the war. This used to be the country others measured themselves against. Its remaining admirers are in Moscow and Pyongyang, and it has become exactly the kind of shithole it used to sneer at.

We need Heritage Minutes for occasions like this. To nurture true historical memory in Canada. I recall him also using the memorable phrase, "fat little chubby little sucker." That, and the "gonads" reference, will never be forgot.
You asked for it…

I take a moment to salute, as I regularly do, one of the best signs in America — found at the Milwaukee airport, after security screening (with the discombobulation such screening entails). At the same time, I salute the boundless ingenuity of the English language.

This. There is no reason why the alleged benefits of “AI” can’t be realised without anthropomorphising it. There should be: No human faces (You should feel perfectly comfortable ignoring or destroying a tool, and a human “skin” makes that harder. Microsoft’s talking paper clip and the “Little Professor” were about as human as I want my tools to pretend to be.) No feigned emotions (eg “I’m sorry” - no, your’e not. We shouldn’t accept that our machines are programmed to lie to us.) No compliments (Your calculator does sums just fine without complimenting you on the problem you ask it to solve.) No human identification (No pronouns, not even “I” - a machine has no identity and shouldn’t be programmed to pretend it does). No attempt to impersonate a human. Ever. When you encounter a bot, it should announce itself as such. “You are working with a non-human LLM that does not care about you. What is your question?” That people like the human touch is the problem, not a feature. Nothing about pretending to be human helps an LLMl solve complex mathematical problems, decipher ancient codices, or find cures for disease, or even answer your online searches. Google’s search was just fine without flattering us or pretending it was having a conversation with a friend. Resist the pretence of humanity. Don’t play along with it. You are an ensouled body. Your “AI” tool isn’t. It has no body and no soul. It’s a complex hammer. A fancy calculator. And you wouldn’t treat those as human.
This is a disaster for the human race and I’ve really lost patience with the useless morons who can’t see that. An AI video chat that passes for human has no necessary legitimate applications. It will be used to scam old people out of their life savings. Lonely, mentally vulnerable people are going to form romantic attachments to people who aren’t real. Isolation will increase. Mental illness will skyrocket even more than it already has. Kids in grade school will have AI boyfriends and girlfriends. All of this will happen. And worse things we can’t even conceive at this point. People are already forming unhealthy emotional attachments to text-based LLMs. Once there’s an audio and visual component, it’s over. Millions of brains will be broken irreparably. The benefits of this technology, whatever they are exactly, are so vastly outweighed by the societal catastrophe it will cause, and is already causing, that you can’t even measure the two categories on the same scale. But at least this is the best thing that ever happened to third world scammers. So if you’re in that community, congratulations.

This book is real. So is the award. In “A Dead White: An Argument Against White Paint” the author argues that white paint isn’t neutral—it carries associations with purity, cleanliness, and power that tie into systems of exclusion and racism. This from the university that gave us Mortimer J Adler and the Great Books movement.

Many people think that the words “Artificial Intelligence” are inaccurate, and very ineloquent, relative to AI, or Artificial Intelligence. A far more elegant and accurate description of this new phenomena would be Superior Intelligence (SI) or, Extreme Intelligence (EI) or, Supreme Intelligence (SI). This is a Poll, and I would appreciate everybody voting! Which is the best name for this ever growing “Revolution?” President DONALD J. TRUMP

When I first heard about this book in 2009 - a biography of Cheetah, the chimp actor of Tarzan fame - I had to read it. Brilliant idea, I thought. Many years later, this bitchy passage (penultimate paragraph) has stayed in my mind. I laughed out loud when I first read it. The he/him/his is Tarzan star and Olympic swimmer, Johnny Weismuller. Beryl is Beryl Scott - the third of his five wives.

Mind you, PET was talking about bringing the full force of the Canadian state down on an infinitely weaker extremist group. Not Canada against the world's superpower.
