2010: Indie and electronica had been stuck to the dancefloors of seedy clubs throughout the 00s, but Dan Snaith (@caribouband) cracked open the windows, let the light in and dragged us out to dance in the sun, sun, sun.

“Like Daft Punk or The Residents, the focus is shifted onto their music, as if they really landed on this planet with one purpose only: to change the face of rock as we know it.”
We take a deep dive into some of music's most otherworldly acts (a thread).

With 'Goo', @thesonicyouth tore into the Nineties on their own terms - louder, sharper and cooler than just about anyone else. Their major label debut didn’t smooth the edges, it sharpened them. Off-kilter tunings, no-wave attitude and downtown art-school sneer, all wrapped up in that iconic Raymond Pettibon sleeve.
It’s the sound of a band in full stride, pushing boundaries while casually redefining what alt-rock could be. Fierce, stylish and forever ahead of the curve.

Few albums feel as singular and chillingly complete as 'Unknown Pleasures'. Joy Division’s debut didn’t just capture a mood, it built a world of shadowy spaces, echoing drums and haunted restraint. Stark, minimal, and deeply affecting, it set the template for post-punk and Peter Saville’s iconic white-on-black pulsar design cover art is as instantly recognisable as the music itself, a visual echo of the album’s eerie stillness.
Last week, Ian Curtis would have celebrated his 69th birthday and while his voice and vision still resonate in every tremor of “Disorder” and “She’s Lost Control", 'Unknown Pleasures' remains a stark, brilliant testament to a band whose influence echoes through every dark corner of alternative music.

'Deserter’s Songs' marked a breathtaking rebirth for Mercury Rev, swapping their noisy, experimental past for sweeping orchestration, melancholy beauty and a surreal Americana dreamscape.
Lush strings, ghostly pianos and Jonathan Donahue’s fragile vocals give the album a cinematic, otherworldly feel, like a haunted lullaby for lost souls.
It’s full of wonder, sadness, and magic; a quiet triumph that slowly became an alt-rock cult classic.

A fitting release date for this overtly American album. Sufjan Stevens' 'Illinois' celebrates its 20th anniversary this Independence Day.
A technicolor production, brought to you in association with the lucid, playful mind of Sufjan Stevens.

Released in 1971, 'There’s a Riot Goin’ On marked a dramatic shift for Sly & The Family Stone trading in their vibrant, feel-good funk for something far darker, murkier and more introspective. Tape hiss, slowed-down grooves and a heavy sense of disillusionment replaced the optimism of earlier records.
It wasn’t just a new direction, it was a turning point. This record reshaped the future of funk, soul and psychedelic music, laying the foundations for everything from P-Funk to G-Funk to hip-hop and neo-soul.
RIP Sly, a true pioneer of funk.
