£900m/yr on EdTech buys 🏴 pupils:
⚠️Health harms
⚠️Safeguarding risk
⚠️Negative impact on learning
Sound like an experiment we should continue with?

Far from improving grades and attainment, the creeping use of screens across the UK's classrooms is a clear and present safeguarding nightmare, causing children an array of physical and developmental problems.
A bold, forward thinking government would apply an emergency handbrake to the use of screens across British schools and only re-introduce them in the limited number of cases where educational benefit is genuinely shown to outweigh proven, observable harm.
Brilliant work from @safe_screens and @HP4SaferScreens in bringing this issue to the forefront.
The EdTech Backlash
"...Winchester’s policy reflects a growing backlash from parents over fears that educational technology, known as edtech, is being overused as research suggests it can be detrimental to children’s concentration & learning"

Teacher: “I had kids come to class after saying, ‘miss, I had no clue what half the material was, I’m not going to lie to you. I’ve been using AI all year"
Pupil: “It slowed my thinking down...when I was in a test and I couldn’t use AI, it was hard to think.”

Strictly Education episode #2 is OUT!
For all teachers and tech enthusiasts!
Also for parents who wonder about tech in the classroom and home and whether it is a force for good.

Meta's $16.7B settlement is the largest accountability moment in social media history for child safety, and the 47 AGs who drove it deserve tremendous credit. Restricted notifications and time limits are good, and it is historic that the AGs have gotten design changes.
But the settlement leaves untouched many of the features that harm kids. For example, the algorithm. Meta's AI-powered recommendation engine is still running, engineered to maximize young people’s engagement even with content that harms them.
It was established in the previous court case (and in Meta’s own research) that Meta's design harms children. The work ahead is to make them change that design — not just how long kids can access Instagram's harmful design, and not just on an opt-in basis. This is a great step. Let's all work together to make sure it's not the last.

Quite the admission from someone at the forefront of edtech adoption (@ISTE_ASCD head @RCulatta:
"When you start handing out devices very quickly without preparing teachers, without carefully selecting the tools, without monitoring them for quality, stuff starts to go off the rails."

The first cohort to have grown up with smartphones from primary school onwards; to have had their education disrupted in an unprecedented way; to see screens embedded into schools with no evaluation.
No wonder children are disengaged from school. Embedding screens into our exam system, under the guise of preparing children for a modern workplace, is the antithesis of what's needed. @LucyMPowell

To suggest pen & paper exams are the problem is bizarre. Moving the exam system onto screen would only push the state school system further in that direction. It is impossible to see how that improves children’s life chances.

This is exactly why children shouldn't be on social media. Platforms are sitting on their hands while kids are served up pornography & funnelled to inappropriate content. I hope Andy Burnham gets on with banning u16s, as so far the only action we’ve seen is useless curfews for over 16s.

Agree with Adam. We should be minimising screen time in schools, not requiring it.
There are, of course, lots of downsides to on screen exams. One is "curricular backwash" whereby more and more schools will start introducing typing on screens to their day to day lessons, as opposed to pen and paper bookwork.
This will definitely be a bad thing. Pedagogically, we know from the research literature and basic lived experience that it will result in worse learning conditions for students.
There are issues with traditional exams, but A. They aren't that big and B. Replacing them with something much much worse is obviously not a good idea.
AQA says there are “no downsides” to digital exams. We can think of many – not least the impact on children. Accessibility risks, mode effects, impact on equity and the digital divide, plus major system + cybersecurity vulnerabilities if thousands of exams depend on platforms and networks rather than paper.
Digital exams may suit exam boards. That doesn’t mean they’re in children’s best interests.
Exclusive: There is ‘almost no downside’ to the introduction of digital exams, says @AQA boss Colin Hughes, calling for more urgency in moving to on-screen assessment, despite recent problems with traditional exams

WATCH: Why AI in the classroom is a catastrophe
Sophie Winkleman is such a brilliant expert on Ed Tech and the travesty that it is in our classrooms. Have a look! youtu.be/yFp5-i5fzyQ?is=O9Be…
An NEU survey of nearly 10,000 teachers found 66% believed pupils’ critical thinking had declined because of AI use.
“Students are clearly using it for homework. I have seen too much cheating recently in exams and homework due to the use of AI.”

Great work from @1001CDF We are concerned about all early years children. Screen harms do not stop on a child's second birthday or at the threshold to nurseries.
@educationgovuk must issue stronger guidance for EYs settings.

Norway ban AI for U-13's in schools, reverse device use and invest in books. This follows a decline in test scores.
"Using AI increases the risk that young children skip important steps in their education."
