👏👏 what a thread, well done that man @EdinvaleFarm! If you want to consider the issues facing the beef industry from the unique point of view of a farmer and butcher, please have a read!

🧵 Its been a bit of while since someone did a hatchet job on the beef industry, but @adeadepitan has picked up the mantle from George Monbiot, Lewis Hamilton, Chris Packham et al and re-lit the anti red meat beacon with #TheBigBritishBeefBattle nitter.cf/AdeAdepitan/status/173…

And back to some sort of normality! Bulls relaxing and cows enjoying a last bite off the marsh following a clear TB test, about 200 animals tested, Welsh Blacks, Highlands and Buffalo. My hat goes off to those on more frequent testing. #tb #allclear #nativebreeds #foragefed

I think I'll take that as a quote @EdinvaleFarm! I thought similar today when running horned cows through for tb testing, it's not their fault they have got to be tested. Engineers meet cows was another thought as a heifer struggled to work out the head yoke... 😬

Nature doesn't have an OTM rule! I can happily take maintenance or loss in cows but in growing stock I think that is a disaster, borderline cruelty. Also I don't think compensatory kicks in until a lot later if there has been a period of weight loss. But I am expecting a lot!!!

Horrendous. @FarmSafetyHour @ECreedOSH @AlanPlom

21 people killed on-farm since April. 11 killed in May alone; the most deadly month for 15 years. The ‘statistics’ include three dead children under 2. One crushed by a wall, one drowned, one run over by a tractor. ‘But that’s the way it’s always been.’

Fascinating thread on reproductive traits, one to really make you think about what we're doing, what we're deleting for and the implications it has. @PastureForLife

This is Old Granny - She was the 1st cow in the Aberdeen Angus herd book in 1858 - She calved at 2 and had a total of 27 calves - getting in calf every year until her last calf. How far have we come since the beginning of the herd book? A Thread 🧵 on Fertility...⬇️

Fascinating thread showing tagging and weighing of calves outdoors.

I often get asked about cowherd data-we start collecting data right from birth. With pasture calving everything, I’ll easily cover 50 miles or more daily on an atv in rough hilly terrain. We’ve used this method to weigh calves for a couple of decades with minor tweaks.

Spring calving cows with their calves off the marshes to their winter quarters today. Both groups walked which is a first time for us. Massive thanks to the farm team for their assistance and for the bemused locals for their patience! #welshblack #outwintering #oldschoolfarming
