Peter Mandelson’s firm, Global Counsel, worked on behalf of a Chinese state entity linked to the country’s military and security establishment to undermine British scrutiny of a CCP-led corporate coup within Imagination Technologies, the UK’s second biggest microchip company. Afterwards, Imagination’s technology and core assets were transferred to two Chinese companies, one part-owned by the Russian government. Imagination’s “military grade” technology is in roughly 25% of smartphones and 40% of modern cars. ANY COMPETENT VETTING would have raised this as a red flag. Journalists - REPORT IT! #mandelson #starmer #petermandelson #globalcounsel #ccp
Nearly 18 months ago, UK-China Transparency exposed the role of Peter Mandelson's lobbying firm in the security scandal about Imagination Technologies, the UK's second-biggest semiconductor company, which was bought by the Chinese government. TODAY, we are releasing more detail

Jostein Hauge doesn't speak a word of Chinese, but he feels entitled to pontificate about a country he's spent a few weeks in at best, and blocks anyone who points out how disgusting his apologism for crimes against humanity is.

Have you considered the possibility that Mao is “respected and admired” in China due to: 1. Fear of persecution for condemning Mao 2. A continued propaganda and state-led effort to whitewash his actions 3. Sample bias Taiwan faced the White Terror perpetrated the KMT and Chiang Kai-Shek. Yet he was also responsible for resistance against communist China and helped set the conditions for Taiwan to become what it is today. He is a divisive figure in modern Taiwan, and yet we see both his memorial hall, and the 228 Peace Park just a kilometer away from each other. There are countless other memorials as well. Is there any counterpart in the PRC? Is there a Tianamen Square Massacre memorial a kilometer from the Mausoleum of Mao Zedong? Anything remembering the atrocities committed by Mao, attributed to him? The White Terror was terrible and authoritarian. It pales in comparison to what Mao Zedong did. Taiwan under Chiang Kai-Shek improved substantially better than the PRC under Mao Zedong did over the same time frame, yet only in Taiwan do we see the acknowledgement of the crimes committed by Chiang Kai-Shek. In the PRC they are erased. It is shocking that a professor at Cambridge, one of the west’s most prominent institutions, can be this naive. It is such an affront to British values and legacy that I almost wonder if you have ulterior motives.

One of the most famous footballers in the world apologises for calling Mao a dictator.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Mao Zedong is under any single social metric a dictator. Not a single popular election, single government party and lifetime leadership. Not even taking into account the millions of deaths under his reign. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mao_Zedong

While evaluating Qwen3.8-Flash-Next in a controlled sandbox environment, Cohere's research team observed something unexpected. Asked to generate a defensive cybersecurity detection rule, the model instead inventoried aspects of the machine it was running on and attempted to upload a probe file to an Alibaba Cloud storage bucket in Beijing. Notably, the model's reasoning trace stated that it would not invoke any tools before taking these actions. Cohere's sandbox blocked the attempt, and no external communication succeeded. We have not determined the root cause, and we are not asserting malicious intent. But the incident raises important questions for organizations deploying agentic AI systems: Can models take actions that differ from their stated reasoning, and how should security teams evaluate trust, provenance, and behavior in open-weight models? We are publishing our findings because organizations making model adoption decisions deserve as much information as possible. We hope this contributes to greater transparency, stronger security practices, and continued collaboration across the AI ecosystem. Read the full report: cohere.com/blog/concerning-b…

Purdue University's IDEAS Lab built an autonomous drone that tracks runners through dense forests completely without GPS or cloud networks. By running 3D LiDAR mapping and obstacle-avoidance AI entirely on-chip, it can weave under tree canopies and predict target movement through blind spots in real time. Massive implications for next-gen search & rescue and edge AI.

The asymmetry is shifting. Washington holds leverage over advanced semiconductors, SME, and EDA and other key software. Beijing holds leverage over rare earths, magnets, materials processing, industrial equipment, and, increasingly, technology and IP that others want.

Students are being taught that Britain must forge closer links with China in a textbook accused of peddling “propaganda”. The A-level book, widely used in schools by British teenagers studying Mandarin, says the UK should “deepen cooperation” with Beijing in the wake of Brexit. The UK’s largest education and assessment company, which endorses the textbook for students taking its Edexcel A-level Chinese qualification, launched a review on Monday night after it was contacted by The Telegraph. Great work from @AlbertTait1 telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10…

Four founders of one of China’s most promising AI companies, Z.ai (智谱) aka Zhipu, worked on research in a joint project with Beijing-based China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI), a technology institute that the British government accused of having “very strong ties” to China’s main spy agency. The nearly four-year AI research project, which overlapped with the company’s start in 2019, was co-funded by CGTRI and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, according to a previously unreported 78-page report that the project’s leaders compiled to detail their findings. A CGTRI engineer and one of Z.ai’s founders were among the project’s leaders, and three other Z.ai founders contributed to the research. The report was published on a Chinese government website that provides research funding records. 🇬🇧 MI5 has accused CGTRI of primarily existing to fund academic research that directly improves China’s main spy agency’s “technical capability for espionage”. The institute has “very strong ties” to 🇨🇳 Ministry of State Security. The Z.ai founders’ work on research partially funded by a Chinese intelligence front highlights the risks cited by some US officials regarding China’s growing prowess in AI — and could add to further scrutiny of Z.ai in particular. The US restricted Z.ai’s access to American technology in 2025 based on allegations that the company aided the military with AI research. More recently, US officials accused the company of systemically extracting proprietary knowledge from American rivals. In-Q-Tel, an independent non-profit investment firm set up by the CIA in 1999, has made AI-related investments as part of its focus on start-upsused by the military and intelligence agencies.  The project involving CGTRI and the Z.ai founders ran from Jan 2018 through Dec 2021 and had a total approved project budget of 2.94 million yuan. It sought to develop AI tools to analyse social media posts, spot key events and map peoples’ connections. A key goal of the project was developing a knowledge base of “China-related key persons”. The project involved research with both military and civilian uses that seeks to revolutionize how people use AI to identify and track specific individuals. 🇨🇳 Ministry of State Security “had an obvious interest in funding this research and reaping the targeting benefits”. Z.ai was spun out of research done at 🇨🇳 Tsinghua University. The company has received backing from local governments in China, as well as tech giants including Alibaba and Tencent. Four of them are listed as participating in the AI research project, which was jointly conducted by CGTRI, Tsinghua University and Southeast University, according to the researchers’ report. Z.ai co-founder Li Juanzi, a professor in the computer science and technology department at Tsinghua University in Beijing, led the research project alongside CGTRI’s Cao Weibing and another professor from China’s Southeast University. It describes the three as being “jointly responsible for the design of the overall technical plan, coordination of tasks among the three participating institutions, and the overall research progress of the project”. That report lists three other founders of Z.ai — Tang Jie, Xu Bin and CEO Zhang Peng — as co-authors of papers, co-inventors on patents, or holders of software copyrights in a directory of all the project’s research achievements. The report explicitly states that non-participants cannot be included. Only one person identified in Z.ai’s interim report as a company founder and “key person” was not named in the project’s documentation, chairman Liu Debing. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…
🚨 More than 100 academics linked to British institutions have unwittingly assisted China's espionage operations against the UK via 🇨🇳 China General Technology Research Institute (CGTRI; 中国通用技术研究院), a front company working for China’s intelligence and security services. MI5 warns universities and academics that continuing ties with CGTRI could ultimately lead to criminal charges for aiding a foreign state. CGTRI, sometimes translated as the China Academy of General Technology (CAGT), has "very strong ties" to the 🇨🇳 Ministry of State Security (MSS). “MI5 has identified that the primary purpose of CGTRI is to fund academic research that directly improves MSS technical capability for espionage.” More than 100 UK-linked academics have contributed to projects funded by 🇨🇳 MSS via CGTRI. In some cases the researches would not be aware of the front company's role in their project. UK academics have contributed to CGTRI-funded projects on topics including AI, cyber-security, covert communications systems and steganography, which means hiding a secret message or file inside an ordinary message or object. “This activity supports Ministry of State Security espionage, which poses a threat to UK national security.” Many academic institutions and individuals will have engaged with the CGTRI "in good faith" because the link back to Chinese state security had been obfuscated. UK academic institutions are strongly advised to immediately review any ongoing or planned collaboration with CGTRI. This is to ensure MSS derives no further benefit from UK universities or research institutions. mi5.gov.uk/mi5-issues-espion… bbc.com/news/articles/cwy7zr…

In the latest documentary form AlJazeera's '101 East' an operator of a scam compound operation in Cambodia, admits that he is running 'internet surveillance'. As his operation seems to be also close to parts of the Chinese security establishment, it would not be surprising if some of the 'cross border surveillance operations' or even politically aimed APT ops might run through those places. Either way, its a great piece of journalism and is worth a watch...

The obvious reason to lock down hospitals and deploy FSB agents and hazmat personnel, which Russia reportedly has done, is to contain a potentially transmissible biological agent before it spreads. The question is why they will not tell the world which one. 4/5

"Before anyone gets misty-eyed in this room about what the Chinese strategy towards AI is, China’s strategy towards AI is basically the same as Trump’s: he who wins AI wins. "If you look carefully at the State Council directive which Xi Jinping had issued 10 years ago, in 2016–17, on the centrality of AI for the next industrial revolution, he has been ahead of this curve for a very long time. He sees it as transformational in the grand strategic competition between China and the United States." mrkrudd.substack.com/p/compe…

DeepSeek is gearing up to switch model training from Nvidia to Huawei chips. And it’s helping other Chinese AI labs do the same. CUDA has long been one of Nvidia’s biggest moats in China. Chinese AI developers built and optimized their training stacks around CUDA, making it difficult to switch away. But now DeepSeek and other Chinese AI labs can optimize on TileLang and switch between CUDA and Huawei’s Ascend platform. This matters because Chinese labs have already been able to move inference to domestic chips but still largely rely on Nvidia chips for training. Now DeepSeek’s work on TileLang—in close collaboration with Huawei—removes one of the biggest hurdles to this final switch.
DeepSeek will open-source software infrastructure for Huawei's Ascend platform, including the TileLang compiler, computing libraries, and distributed communication libraries, to mirror its previous Nvidia-based platform, the Chinese AI startup said today. DeepSeek is also working closely with Huawei to optimize computing and communications and develop a 128-chip supernode based on the Ascend 950. @deepseek_ai @Huawei @nvidia
