After the inconclusive Israeli elections and before the US midterms, this post looks at the role the Iran War played in both elections. Israelis backed the war; Americans didn’t. Now Netanyahu wants another iteration. Trump dithers but watch Vance.(£/free trial) samf.substack.com/p/the-poli…?

Of particular interest is Vance starting to freelance on Iran, which could be setting up a major battle for the Republican party after the midterms....
New post from @LawDavF Israeli and US elections have been affected by the Iran War in very different ways. What does that mean for how things will develop once the midterms are over? samf.substack.com/p/the-poli…

Hidden away in the OBR report is this concerning graph showing housing completions - looks like even their reduced forecast is optimistic. Plus rents and mortgages are going to get more expensive due to interest rates + the extra property tax.

Adm. Tony Radakin: 'I contrast it [normal UK defence procurement] with how we’ve been supporting Ukraine, where we used a different set of procurement rules – the Kindred rules – where we can literally go 10 times faster because we can take some financial and operational risk. The conversations we had during my time were: ‘Do you apply the Kindred rules to everything that we’re procuring, with exceptions for nuclear submarines and fast jets, and cut through the existing processes?’' samf.substack.com/p/whitehal…

The difference in the speed between our procurement process to buy weapons for Ukraine and our own weapons, is extraordinary...

Honestly what is the Steel Man argument for a process that is so bad we have an entirely separate process for when we really, actually want to do something?

So many interesting nuggets like this on the weeks before Russia's invasion when the UK was trying to assess their plans to defend themselves.

There's so much in there we've split it into two parts. Today's focuses on Ukraine, Russia and the lessons for the UK. Tomorrow is on spending and procurement.
