A new entrant is set to contest the Uttar Pradesh elections: the Sarvajana Sanatan Party, founded by former CBI chief M. Nageswara Rao, with the Jyotirmath Shankaracharya as its chief mentor. Its leaders say they will challenge the narrative the BJP has built in the state, and its social media posts appear aimed at holding up a mirror to the ruling party.
It is a small, nascent outfit, but its significance may lie less in seats than in whom it reaches. Hindu voters, and Brahmins in particular, who are unhappy with the BJP yet reluctant to back the Samajwadi Party, may find it a more comfortable home.
If the INDIA alliance were to form an electoral pact with such a party and allocate it a few seats, it could send a powerful message.
