I've been pointing out since the early 2010s that Thomas Piketty, Emmanuel Saez, and Gabriel Zucman have a bad habit of biasing their data construction to fit their politics. Whenever they make a suspect call in how to handle stats, it ends up showing that inequality is on the rise. They almost never go in the other direction. The errors are non-random and almost invariably reinforce their political claims about rising income and wealth concentration since 1980. Piketty did this throughout his book Capital in the 21st Century. Piketty and Saez did this throughout their famous 2003 paper on inequality in the US. Piketty, Saez, and Zucman Saez and Zucman did this in their Distributional National Accounts paper that Auten and Splinter dissected. Saez and Zucman did this in their 2019 book on tax incidence and inequality. Saez and Zucman did this in their flurry of "studies" and white papers to support Elizabeth Warren's wealth tax proposal, California Prop 40, a new wealth tax in France, and dozens of other similar examples. A new AI report (linked below) audited 138 papers by Saez and Zucman. It found thousands of errors, 194 of which were serious. A whopping 97% of the serious errors went in the same direction: they showed inequality rising faster or made it higher. But there's a bigger scandal at play here. Despite these clear biases, Piketty, Saez, and Zucman have enjoyed a stream of praise and prestige within the economics profession. They get expedited and friendly reviews in top econ journals even though a more serious peer review should have caught many of these errors (the Quarterly Journal of Economics is a recurring offender in this regard). Journals regularly give them a pass after the errors in their old work come to light - they're never expected to correct any of it, and just keep on using it as if nothing changed. Their non-peer reviewed data claims are also treated as gospel by major media outlets such as the New York Times and the Washington Post. And they get showered with prizes - Saez and Zucman are both Clark Medal winners from the AEA, and Zucman got his prize in 2023 after evidence of major data shenanigans in his work came to light in 2019. Until now, those of us who have been trying to correct the record have had to wade through the PSZ trio's cluttered, disorganized, and often non-transparent replication packages (almost all of which are convoluted piles of Excel spreadsheets) to find the problems. I did a line-by-line replication of Piketty and Saez's entire 2003 US income inequality series to use one example, and found it was riddled with errors - almost every single one of which biased their results in favor of their political story. We had the means to catch this stuff as it was happening, but the economics profession failed to do its job. And it failed precisely because its elite ranks wanted to believe the Piketty-Saez-Zucman story for political reasons.

Somewhere in India. A good size elephant herd moving from one forest to another through a tea garden. Elephants are long ranging animals. Imagine a big herd staying at a single place; they will eat up all. So they move and let forest rejuvenate.

Staff of NGO Doctors Without Borders caught for mass scale sex-for-aid scandal. This sort of thing has been whispered about for years, glad the investigation found hard evidence in Chad. However, there should be investigations in other countries as well.
BREAKING: Switzerland suspends funding to Doctors Without Borders after it failed to report that its staff exploited refugee women and girls for sex—in exchange for aid, jobs and money. Previously, 🇨🇭 called MSF “a source of best practice and inspiration.” swissinfo.ch/eng/internation…

This should be life ban behaviour..... no combat sport would survive if this is allowed
Even in sports they are criminals USA’s Morgan Turner twiced poked Russia’s Elizaveta Smirnova in the eyes during the World Wrestling Championships. Smirnova was left with a serious corneal injury and rushed to hospital. Turner was disqualified on the spot. Not enough - she should be arrested and given a 20 year sentence.

The photo shows the original 18th century Maratha cavalry "bhala" that was often 12 feet long. Made from hollow bamboo, they were light enough for one hand and flexible enough not shatter on contact. This is what made them deadly. Tactical use: A small squadron of Maratha horsemen would ride rapidly toward the enemy line, brandishing their ultra-long bhalas. They would deliberately stir up massive clouds of dust to obscure their true numbers.Just as they drew close to the enemy's musket fire range, the Marathas would abruptly turn their horses and flee in apparent panic and disorder. Seeing the enemy run, opposing commanders or overeager cavalry would often break their disciplined formation to give chase. The moment the enemy line fractured, the Marathas would instantly wheel their highly agile horses around and counter-attack. The British eventually developed packed musket formations (such as squares) to beat cavalry. This was then used against Napoleon at Waterloo by Wellington
State Elephant, Benares (Varanasi). Photograph circa 1880s.The Maharajas of Benares (known as the Kashi Naresh) maintained a lavish royal household and fleet of state elephants used for ceremonial processions, durbars, and festivals. State elephants were draped in heavy, gold-embroidered silk, brocade cloths, and jewelled body paint. They carried ornate metal or silver howdahs (riding seats) where the Maharaja or high officials sat. The elephant was guided by a mahout (elephant controller), whose official uniform often reflected his status within the royal cavalry or household staff. A prominent context for these elephants was the grand annual inauguration of the Ramnagar Ramlila. Started in the mid-19th century by Maharaja Udit Narayan Singh, the Kashi Naresh traditionally led the opening pageantry of the 31-day folk-theatre cycle riding atop a ceremonial state elephant. #Varanasi #royalty #elephant #history

Drop by for a week once a decade on DC and you are good to wax eloquent on US politics
This writeup of my recent reporting from India made me think: I'd love to read a piece by an Indian journalist who lived in the US from 2009-2013, has since followed its politics and culture obsessively, and returned after nearly a decade's absence! indiatoday.in/india/story/ly…

A busy street, Avenue road, Bangalore— c. 1870s. Avenue Road is the historic and commercial heart of Bengaluru, dating back to the founding of the city in the 16th century. The road forms the north-south axis of the original Bengaluru Pete laid out by the chieftain Kempe Gowda I in 1537. It was historically known as Doddapete (meaning "Big Market" in Kannada) or Dodda Beedi. It was also called the royal street or main entry path for dignitaries arriving in the settlement. It was named Avenue Road later due to the grand, tree-lined canopy of massive trees that once shaded the passage. It became home to prominent institutions, including the Rice Memorial Church established via the London Missionary Society in the 19th century. It served as a key arrival and trading haven for thousands of refugees migrating from Pakistan following Independence. It evolved through centuries as a vibrant melting pot of weavers, grain merchants, brass workers, and specialized guilds. It was globally and locally renowned for dense clusters of old, rare, and second-hand bookshops. It's also a major commercial centre for wholesale and retail silk saris, garments, and fabrics. It's a long-standing baseline market for bullion, traditional jewelry, and financial trade as well. It's dotted with over two hundred ancient shrines, temples (such as the 16th-century Anjaneya and Ranganatha Swami temples), local dargahs, and historic community kattes (tree platforms). #Bengaluru #street #history @DrDeepakKrishn1 @anilbhatortho

And none of the founding fathers had a sense of direction ..... they were under the impression that they had reached India
I don't mean offense to anybody, but none of our founding fathers were Hindu. None of our founding fathers were Muslim, and none of our founding fathers were Jewish. This was built on Christian principles, and we can never forget that.
