Very excited to announce that my newsletter, Dramatic Pause, will be starting up on Monday (Feb 10). There will be three posts a week – one reported piece of arts coverage, one piece of criticism, and another piece of my choosing. dramatic-pause.ghost.io/

Fandom spaces have been infiltrated by people who want to be popular/ treated like influencers for their contributions as opposed to just people excited to be surrounded by other people who like the same thing they like and want to show them the cool shit they wrote.
I feel like some of yall are losing the plot… THE HISTORY OF FANFICTION IS PASSING STORIES BETWEEN FANS THE STAR TREK FANDOM, FOUNDERS OF FANFICTION, WOULD TYPE FICS ON THEIR LITTLE TYPEWRITERS, PHOTOCOPY THEM, AND PASS THEM AROUND AT CONS

Something that always kinda stuck with me is when Maron interviewed Patrick Stewart, at one point he goes “so you’re on your third wife” and Stewart calmly but coldly goes “can we rephrase that ?” Such a simple thing but why would you refer to someone’s partner like a car lol

One of my favorite things about Ken Russell was that he was next level petty: Paddy Chayefsky had it in his contract that Russell couldn’t change a *single world* of Chayefsky’s verbose Altered States screenplay, so Russell got revenge by having the actors say every single word in the script, but in ways that made it sound ridiculous (rapid fire delivery, actors talking over each other, sometimes while eating) to the point that Chayefsky demanded they take his name off the film youtu.be/aLYWDYxuKSY

re: Ebert occasionally "missing" on a great movie, I think people forget that the point of criticizing art is not to be "correct," it's to engage with the work sincerely; a critic should be evaluated less on "correctness" and more the consistency/depth of their work

so far having a phd is less fun that i thought it would be. it's true that my friends call me Dr. Anna. but i can tell they do not mean it with the respect that the title deserves

Spoke to a college writing class where I introduced the students to some very important concepts: — reading is more important than writing — that said, writing is also very important — that said, a lot of writers are pretty bad — Armond White

Horrified to learn documentary films do not provide unfiltered access to objective truth. Have any documentary makers wrestled with this question

no. it doesnt imrpove anything. actually if you read your brain starts turning into mush and writing becomes impossible. what you need to do is to watch at least 100 tiktoks a day and like 50 tweets a day as bare minimum. it will allow you to reach the greatest heights
does reading a lot naturally improve writing ability?

Robert Carlock pointed towards the Homonym game show as his favorite cut-away gag in 30 Rock and yeah it's one of the best.

I read and buy a lot of contemporary poetry but don’t write any and — not to brag — but I believe this qualifies me for a form of secular sainthood

Actually really like parts of the new Troye album but nothing can convince me that it isn’t Ninajirachi who is currently Australia’s most interesting pop star, representing the culture in all of its extremes, and the true spiritual successor to national figurehead Kylie Minogue
