Kevin Sinfield has just watched his son Jack reach the Grand Final with Wakefield.
Tomorrow Sinfield snr sets off on his 'Grand Finale' of seven ultra-marathons, finishing at Old Trafford, where he'll carry the trophy in for a game his son will be part of.

You could say Mark Wood should have slowed down. Maybe he should have. Three ankle operations before he was 27 would have convinced most bowlers to settle for 85 mph. He went looking for more.
You could say the longer run-up was madness. Every fast bowler past 30 is told to shorten it. Fair enough. But he added yards instead, and at 34 he bowled 97.1 mph at Trent Bridge, the fastest Test over any Englishman has bowled at home.
You could say he was never fit enough to matter. Maybe. But in 2023 England were 2-0 down in the Ashes when he arrived, and 14 wickets at 20.21 later it was 2-2.
You could say he would have lasted longer at a gentler pace. He probably would have.
But then he would not have been Mark Wood.
Elbow stress. Knee surgery. Fifteen months out. Eleven overs at Perth, and that was the end.
It all came at a cost. He paid it every time, and never once bowled a ball slower.
Thank you, Woody.

Fifty years ago today .. a few balls from the infamous Saturday evening session in the 3rd Test between England and West Indies, Old Trafford, July 10th 1976. The guts shown by 45-year-old Brian Close, with almost no protection, still stands out, refusing to be bowed despite clear pain from the blows. David Steele recalled when Close came back to the dressing room at the end of the day. "He stood there, no teeth, no hair and a big grin ... he loved it. He bloody loved it." Here's a link to an article I wrote on that day for Cricinfo - bit.ly/4gwnmLI

Started telling the players a day in advance that they’re in my list of Manchester United’s greatest players for @TheAthleticFC
Just received this back from number 18, published tomorrow after I’ve spoken to more who played with him.

May the good Lord forgive me, but I'm going with another Association Football sketch this morning, and this one's my absolute favourite.
It might not feature international Association Football, but Harry Enfield's gloriously glorious sketch involving a 1930's Arsenal team (featuring their captain, Charles "Charlie" Charles), taking on the 1991 Liverpool team - in black and white - is a thing of genuine comedic beauty.
Can you believe this is 35 years old!!
Good morning.

I first stumbled on Adrian’s story in 2011 when researching a feature on Ryan Giggs. I asked @TheRealBozza and @Alan_Tonge whether Giggs stuck out a mile in #MUFC youth team, expecting to hear "Yes of course he did."
Instead, both replied: “Have you heard of Adrian Doherty?”

🚨Arsenal have been crowding goalkeepers all season, we literally lost the first game of the season against them because William Saliba was allowed to touch Altay Bayındır’s hand and somehow the goal still stood.
Now they’re benefiting from the exact same thing again in a title race…Either it’s a foul every time or it’s never a foul. The inconsistency is what frustrates fans the most.
