Congratulations to Dr. Amos Treiber on successfully defending his PhD on "Analyzing and Applying Cryptographic Mechanisms to Protect Privacy in Applications" @ENCRYPTO_Group @CS_TUDarmstadt @TUDarmstadt yesterday! Thanks to the PhD committee @senykam, @IGurevych & Marc Fischlin.
We recently had major end-to-end encryption announcements from @MongoDB (Queryable Encryption) & @Meta (Messenger).
To hear more about the crypto behind these announcements come see @TarikMoataz @kennwhite and @JonMillican ‘s talks at TPES on Saturday: esl.cs.brown.edu/tpes/

Messenger is announcing one of its incremental E2EE rollouts today, which...good! But Meta says the timing is long-planned and unrelated to revelations that the company was compelled by law enforcement to hand over chat data in the Nebraska abortion case wired.com/story/meta-messeng…
If you're interested in data security & preventing data breaches, here is a good article by @kaspersky on @MongoDB 's Queryable Encryption: kaspersky.com/blog/mongodb-q…

@MongoDB's announcement of “Queryable Encryption” which it says is a major step forward in the realm of data security, had its roots in the research of Brown CS Professor @senykam and Visiting Scientist @TarikMoataz.

We're excited to announce the 1st Workshop on the Theory and Practice of Encrypted Search (TPES) on which is affiliated with CRYPTO '22: esl.cs.brown.edu/tpes/
Thanks to our sponsors @MongoDB & @Google we have funding for students who would like to attend

It’s also pretty cool that @MongoDB was co-founded by @BrownCSDept alumni and that I run into a bunch of our students there on a regular basis (including some of my CS 16 students and TAs!)
In other cool news happening at @BrownCSDept this week, @senykam's fantastic work on encrypted search has gone commercial in a big way.

Apply now! @BrownCSDept Professor Daniel Ritchie and 9 colleagues are launching a summer program for students from HUGs in CS to do original research on AI for computational creativity. 9 weeks: full funding includes travel costs, housing, $6,480 stipend. bit.ly/3ILWt1L
It took a lot of advances in research to get to a point where something like this could be viable. But what we don't usually see as researchers is the engineering & product effort that goes into something like this. The number of people involved in building this is staggering.
MongoDB is taking a big swing with a searchable encryption database feature called Queryable Encryption. They worked with cryptographers @senykam and @TarikMoataz to make research practical and it's open source today. AND they claim it's actually fast wired.com/story/mongodb-quer…
...to a team of driver engineers who implemented it in a dozen languages, to the shell & compass team who had to integrate it into the core mongo tools and to the documentation team who produced the docs.
There will be an affiliated workshop at CRYPTO 22 on the Theory and Practice of Encrypted Search where we will discuss some of the challenges that come up when designing encrypted search algorithms for a real database platform.

Thanks Nigel! There will be several docs including a high level technical brief and eventually a more formal paper. We had to introduce a lot of new techniques to satisfy a ton of real world constraints that have never appeared in research before.
.@MongoDB is making a serious investment in encrypted search & cryptography in general and creating a new crypto research group in New York City.

😂 Both @TarikMoataz and I really appreciate your and the entire lab’s patience (especially all the rescheduled meetings!) while we worked on this
