#JONGSEOB warned that heβd address the religious aspects of βtheo or goldenβ, so it may be sensitive. a p1eceβs review reflected on how the book was very insistent on pushing its messianic agenda in an idealised fairy-tale way, and he also built on this view since heβs an atheist! π
πββ¬: ββ¦rather than feeling like this book offered perspectives to explore, [..] it felt more like receiving lessons from a teacher at school. i guess i just couldn't shake that feeling, which is why i really related to the sentiment shared by this person. [..] so rather than becoming a friend or neighbor to the other characters in the story, the man seems to be there to impart some kind of teaching or to 'save' people.
πββ¬: it's like he's not having a mutual conversation with these people, it's more like... well, you know, when you go to a church, there's a place for confession, right? it's kind of like, the characters in this story seem to be making a sort of confession to this theo guy? so that's why, well, for me, since i don't really follow any religion, that was one of the things that actually struck me even more vividly.β

itβs so important discuss controversies within literature, to form our own arguments and walk away with heightened critical thinking. for an idol like jongseob to relay this in his own book club with a large platform, itβs interesting see his own thought process when reflecting on what we can learn from reading π«Ά
πββ¬: [..] i wanted to explain these things in a way that would make it easier to understand, with input from those who have other cultural backgrounds outside korea. it might give us a new perspective on how we live our lives, [..] which is why i've spent so much time going through these reviews of βtheo of goldenβ today.
πββ¬: [..] i enjoyed reading the book itself, but personally, as i mentioned earlier, there were aspects of it that felt quite messianic to me, and as i read through the reviews that p1ece had written, i found myself thinking, 'wow, there are so many fresh perspectives here,' and that was something i really came to appreciate. so, thatβs why i think this session was actually quite meaningful for me. and, since we're not just confined to korea, we travel abroad quite a lot and have many conversations and interactions with overseas p1ece. in that regard, i found myself thinking, "oh, it would really be great to know something like this then.β

iβm really happy with the way jongseob approached the criticisms to his book of the month, he sensitively considered all perspectives and even said that there were a lot of aspects he was exposed to that he wouldnβt have considered before, i think the book club really is benefitting us all bc of this π₯Ήπ
#JONGSEOB in his book club exploring the issue of translation not fully expressing the nuance of AAVE, something i expressed in my review (full passage in pic)! π
πββ¬: [..] it's really just... right, one of those things that koreans simply cannot understand naturally. we've read the book "theo" in korean, but this is something that comes across in english-speaking cultures β certain subtle differences in wording and such that we just wouldn't be able to pick up on, right? this person said at the end, the novel 'committed the error of reducing these characters to mere markers of difference in contrast to the norm rather than acknowledging the full complexityβ. [..] and even though they use the same english, as mentioned, there can be language variants with their own unique structures.
πββ¬: therefore, i can see how people's perceptions of this aspect might vary greatly depending on how it's being presented as text within the book. so when it came to incorporating this system of linguistic variation as an element in this book, i definitely thought quite a bit about how the way it was expressed could perhaps be a little more careful. after all since this part was explained in such detail, not only was it the first time i'd become aware of it, but i also learned a lot from this topic.
πββ¬: [..] until now, i'd always thought of those aspects in quite simple terms, just thinking, 'oh, so this is how they've chosen to express it in korean translation,'. but when reading the original english text, or the original text in another language, these aspects might come across quite differently to readers from the cultural backgrounds in which these characters live, and i think it was only while reading this review that i first began to consider how that could happen. so when i realised that using such differences simply to highlight the cultural differences between two characters, i found myself beginning to consider: 'oh, this isn't as straightforward of a story as i thought. this could actually be problematic, and could be oversimplifying something quite complex.β

#JONGSEOB read my book review of theo of golden, and discussed the concerns i had regarding the linguistic expression of african american english in the book, and how poorly expressed writing can create cultural prejudices within the barriers of translation too β£οΈ

πββ¬ said he never would have naturally thought to bring up perspective as a korean person, so he learned a lot from this. iβm so happy to have been able to educate him through my review and so proud that he chose to address it so thoughtfully. as a black person, i am so incredibly grateful that he took the time to read the entire review out loud so that there were no misunderstandings π₯Ή
