🧵A short thread on some of Saber's design symbolism. Koyama and Takeuchi both worked on Saber's various design elements and if you look at their elements closer, there's quite a bit of symbolism. Some of it obvious, some of it more obscure.

📄The Honour and Dishonour of Sir Lancelot Let's give a little more detail as to why "adulterous Lancelot" as a flat characterisation goes too far. Though my enthusiastic denial of it being the case in Sir Thomas Malory's depiction equally goes too far.
The version of the Arthurian Romances that ended up being the most influential (Le Morte D'Arthur) excluded the actual adultery, and had Lancelot/Guinevere framed - this being the treachery that plunged Camelot into darkness (lib. VIII). Lancelot was honourable.

Malory’s narrator is reluctant to show the affair, and leaves the night of the trap unresolved though this weighs on the side of the act not being committed. The plotters really were malicious. And early Lancelot really does set out the ideal knight described.

But Lancelot does not live up to that ideal, and the book is largely about that failure. Restoration to the moral ideal is left inconclusive, prompted in repentance but never quite complete in the text. /fin
