Terrorists attacked an army camp in Jammu while an officer's wife and 3 year old daughter were asleep inside. He went out to fight them. For almost ten hours his wife did not know he was already dead.
His name was Major Akshay Girish, an army officer from Bengaluru and the son of a retired Wing Commander.
In 2009 he proposed to Sangeeta on one knee with a red pen drive because he had forgotten the ring. They married and had a daughter, Naina. Sangeeta chose to move with him from posting to posting instead of staying back in Bengaluru.
In 2016 they were living inside the army camp at Nagrota.
On 29 November 2016, at 5.30 am, Sangeeta woke up to gunshots. She thought it was training.
At 5.45 a junior officer told Akshay that terrorists had attacked the artillery regiment. Akshay left with the quick response team.
At 8.09 am he texted the family group that he was in the firefight.
The women and children were moved to a safer place. At 11.30 Sangeeta called him. His team said he had gone to a different location.
At 6.15 pm his commanding officer told her that Akshay had been killed around 8.30 that morning.
He was 31. Naina was 3. Seven soldiers died at Nagrota that day.
Sangeeta later told Naina that her papa is a star in the sky. She still wears his regimental jacket when she misses him.
His family believed he had been recommended for the Shaurya Chakra. On 15 August 2017 his name came on the list under Mention in Dispatches. His mother Meghna asked for a review and said an unsung hero is better than an insulted hero.
Sangeeta wrote their whole story on Facebook, and the post went viral.
The last thing Akshay had said to her that morning was "You must write about this."

Maggi sold in India must be labeled as “Cancer Warning"? 🤔
The claim that Maggi noodles sold in California carry a cancer warning raises serious questions about food safety standards and why consumers in India may not receive the same level of transparency.
India must never become a dumping ground for products or chemicals that other countries restrict or reject. The historical use of DDT and the controversies surrounding the Green Revolution also raise important questions about the long-term consequences of chemical-intensive agriculture.
Indian consumers deserve the same safety standards, transparency, and protection as consumers anywhere in the world.
Indian citizens health should never be treated as less important. 🇮🇳

Because a city isn’t made beautiful by its buildings and roads alone, but also by the people who treat it like home and work to make it better. Is there someone in your city who is making it a better place through small acts of kindness? Tell us in the comments!

A tribal farmer from Wayanad died this week at 74. In his old mud house, he kept more than 60 traditional rice varieties alive.
His name was Cheruvayal Raman. People called him Ramettan.
He belonged to the Kurichya tribe in Wayanad, Kerala. When he was 17, his uncle died, and the family's traditional rice seeds came to him.
Wayanad once had around 160 native rice varieties. Most of them have disappeared.
He grew each old variety in its own small plot. Every year he harvested it, dried the seeds, and stored them in his mud house for the next season.
He stopped using chemical fertiliser in 1978. He said the earthworms came back after that.
It cost him around Rs 70,000 a year. Some years, his family lived on ration rice.
When other farmers came asking, mostly tribal families, he gave them seeds without taking money.
In 2023, he got the Padma Shri. Kerala Agricultural University made him a professor of practice.
He once said, "Don't call me a hero. Make sure the seeds survive. That is enough."

Nashik’s groundwater reportedly contains cancer-causing chromium at over 1,000 times the permissible limit. Residents have complained of yellow water coming from their borewells. So, how do you clean up pollution that has seeped underground? In Baltimore, USA, a former chromium-processing factory left behind contaminated soil and groundwater even after it shut down. The cleanup involved removing contaminated material, containing the pollution underground and controlling groundwater movement. The site was redeveloped, but monitoring remains essential. Because containing contamination doesn’t mean it has disappeared. With the 2027 Kumbh approaching, Nashik needs answers: Where is the chromium coming from? How far has it spread? And what will it take to protect the city’s groundwater? Safe water starts with finding the source, containing the spread and testing regularly.

COMMANDING OFFICER 4/5 GORKHA RIFLES (FF)
Lt Col Bawa laid down his life fighting the LTTE #OnThisDay 13 October in 1987 in Jaffna
The #IndianBrave led his troops till his last, in aid of 13 SIKH LI & 10 PARA during #OpPawan
Deployed in Sri Lanka as part of the operation of the #IPKF, Lt Col Bawa landed with his battalion 4/5 Gorkha Rifles (FF) at Palai on 11 October 1987 and went immediately into battle with the task of clearing the Axis Vasavilan-Urgmpurai-Jaffna Fort.
The militants desperately contested the advance from strong fortified positions. Lt Col Bawa contained, bypassed and reduced each position, inflicting heavy casualties on the militants. He personally led his command and was a sustained inspiration to his men.
The battalion was again detailed to extricate 13 Sikh LI and 10 Para Commando teams from the Kondavil North area. Lt Col Bawa again led 4/5 #GorkhaRifles (FF) through heavily fortified territory, linked up with the above force, and successfully extricated them on 13 October 1987
During this effort, a militant suicide squad sprayed him with a hail of bullets, and the #IndianBrave laid down his life fighting gallantly. Lt Col displayed conspicuous bravery and vital leadership in the face of frenzied militants.
#LestWeForgetIndia🇮🇳 Lieutenant Colonel Inder Bal Singh Bawa was awarded the #MahaVirChakra posthumously.
