Very few people may know her. Her name was Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit — daughter of Motilal Nehru and sister of Jawaharlal Nehru. Qualification: She never attended school or college. Yet, she went on to serve as India’s ambassador to China, Mexico, Moscow, Ireland, Britain, and the United States ….because she was the sister of India’s Prime Minister. There is also a particularly interesting and rather foolish episode associated with her at the UN. In 1951, China occupied Tibet and was strengthening its position in Asia, becoming an increasing threat to neighbouring countries. In 1960, concerned about the seriousness of the situation, US President John F. Kennedy reportedly called India’s ambassador Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit to the UN and proposed that India conduct a nuclear test with American cooperation to counter China’s growing influence and maintain the balance of power in Asia. The argument was that if India became a nuclear power, China would be deterred from attacking a nuclear-armed country. Mrs. Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit reportedly responded that India was a country committed to Gandhi’s principle of non-violence and that India saw no threat from any country in the world. She rejected the American proposal without even considering it necessary to seek the opinion of the Indian government in Delhi. Then, in 1962, exactly what America had feared happened: China attacked India and occupied Aksai Chin.
