He says he always knew he wasn’t getting a job in Burnham’s cabinet. When he tallied up the number of people the incoming Prime Minister owed jobs to – “people who had evidently done deals, or called for Keir to resign in public or had resigned themselves, plus people he needed to bring back who had not been in the cabinet and had supported the coup… the numbers didn’t add up”. He doesn’t shy away from the idea that some of the most prominent figures in the cabinet knifed Starmer in the back in return for a job at the top table.
