Somebody buried this statue on purpose. The Boxer at Rest came out of the Quirinal Hill in Rome in 1885, and a second great Hellenistic bronze surfaced in the same area within a month.
Both had been carefully placed in the ground in antiquity, almost certainly to keep them away from a furnace.
Bronze was worth melting, which is why so little Greek bronze survives and why this one feels like a survivor.
