On Weil and why it matters for legal AI.
Most non-lawyers assume law firms have the same incentives as any other corporate org.
Legal tech makes this mistake all the time. They pitch law firms with products to improve efficiency and capture institutional knowledge.
But...
If you're selling to anyone other than rainmaking partners, and if your product doesn't align with their incentives—inefficiency (more billable hours) and portability (captive relationships, know-how, and individual sovereignty)—then you might as well be talking to a wall.
I get extremely uptight when anyone even comes close to touching my laptop screen, which must be spotless at all times.
We're all opted out of model training, right?
If you're a lawyer and don't know how, why, or what that means...
1. Most non-business AI plans have model training on by default.
2. Bar associations have a thing about model training. They see it as too risky for client work.
3. In your AI account settings, you can opt out of model training. Look for "Improve the model for everyone" or a similar option. Turn it off.
4. Business accounts and API account usually start with model training off.
It's silly to trade MS Word drafts via email during contract negotiations.
We should extract the initial contract content into a shared workspace where we engage in substantive back-and-forth, both internally with our own deal team and with the counterparty team.
The other day, I sent a bundle of contracts with a cover note that included some useful prompts to make the recipient's review easier.
I'm imagining a world where we transmit contract files via a group AI chat that generates these suggested prompts automatically.

Bye bye Law Bro GPT. Get our new anti-slop skill, but first watch our Anti-AI Slop AI Slop music video first.

I gave Claude some decade-old deal folders and asked him to rate my performance as outside counsel.
He gave me a B+
I got points for substance and fast turnaround, but Claude wasn't impressed with my drafting "hygiene", closing protocol, and said my first draft took too long.
