B. Purani, one of his close disciples.) >>>>>>>> Disciple: Are Indians more spiritual than other people? Sri Aurobindo: No. No nation is entirely spiritual. The Indians are not more spiritual than others, but the influence of the past is there behind the Indian race. Disciple: Some of the prominent Indian national workers strike me as incarnations of some European power. Sri Aurobindo: They may not be incarnations, but they are very much influenced by European thought. Gandhi, for instance, is a European — truly, a Russian Christian in an Indian body. And there are Indians in European bodies! Disciple: Gandhi, a European? Sri Aurobindo: Yes. The Europeans themselves say that he is more Christian than many Christians — some even call him the “modern Christ.” That is perfectly correct. His whole gospel is taken from Christianity — the Sermon on the Mount, non-resistance, suffering, etc. — and though his form is Indian, the substance is Christian. He is a kind of continuation of the impulse that came from Tolstoy and others, and he is also much influenced by Jainism. He is not a man of the Indian spiritual ideas — the ideas of the Gita or the Upanishads. He is a European mentally, with Indian samskaras and a Hindu religious background. Disciple: Many educated Indians regard him as a spiritual man. Sri Aurobindo: That is because the Europeans call him spiritual! What he preaches is not Indian spirituality but something derived from Russian Christianity, non-violence, suffering, etc. 🔶 गाँधी और टॉल्स्टॉय में अन्तर — सत्य और आचरण की कसौटी पर 🌿 टॉल्स्टॉय: अपने जीवन में जो कहा, वही जिया। राजमहलों का त्याग कर, कृषक वेश में जीवन बिताया। निःस्वार्थ जीवन, सच्ची करुणा, और आत्म-नियन्त्रण का उदाहरण बने। उन्होंने किसी राजनैतिक पद की आकांक्षा नहीं रखी, न ही लोगों को अपने अनुयायी बनने का दबाव दिया। 🐍 गाँधी: जो कहा, उससे भिन्न आचरण किया। "सत्य" और "अहिंसा" की बातें करते हुए भी, भारत विभाजन जैसे हिंसक परिणामों के जिम्मेदार बने। निजी जीवन में भी कई आचरण ऐसे थे जिन्हें छिपाया गया (जैसे "ब्रह्मचर्य परीक्षण" आदि)। उनकी शिक्षाएँ भारतीय वेदान्त या गीता की मूल भावना से दूर थीं — वे त्याग की बात करते रहे, परन्तु सत्ता और लोकप्रियता का मोह नहीं त्याग सके। 🔷 भारतीय अध्यात्म और गाँधी का उपदेश — मूल भेद विषय भारतीय अध्यात्म (श्री अरविन्द की दृष्टि) गाँधी का उपदेश मूल प्रेरणा आत्म-साक्षात्कार, ब्रह्म से एकत्व टॉल्स्टॉय, बाइबिल, जैन धर्म साधना का स्वरूप अन्तर्मुखी तप, योग द्वारा चेतना का रूपान्तरण बाह्य नैतिकता, आत्म-पीड़ा, दण्ड स्वरूप उपवास लक्ष्य मुक्ति, चैतन्य का आरोहण सामाजिक सुधार, राजनैतिक स्वतन्त्रता मार्ग ज्ञानयोग, कर्मयोग, भक्ति का समन्वय केवल 'अहिंसा' और 'सत्याग्रह' आध्यात्मिकता की परिभाषा ब्रह्मविद्या के प्रकाश में जीना दुःख सहकर दूसरों को प्रेरित करना 🔶 निष्कर्ष: टॉल्स्टॉय एक सच्चे साधक थे, जिन्होंने आत्मा की पुकार सुनी और जीवन में उतारी। गाँधी केवल मुख से साधना की बातें करते रहे, पर उनके जीवन का वास्तविक आधार था पश्चिमी नैतिकता का प्रचार — वह भी भारत की भूमि पर, भारतीय वेदों की जगह रखकर। श्री अरविन्द ने ठीक ही कहा — "गाँधी एक भारतीय शरीर में रूसी ईसाई हैं। वे उपनिषद या गीता से नहीं, टॉल्स्टॉय और बाइबिल से चलते हैं।" किन्तु गाँधी ने न तो टॉल्स्टॉय का अनुकरण किया और न ईसा का । राजनीति के लिए अध्यात्म का “इस्तेमाल” किया । उन्होंने नेहरू को अपना उत्तराधिकारी बनाया जिसने अध्यात्म का नकली मुखौटा भी उतार फेँका और लाइसेन्स−परमिट राज द्वारा भारत के आर्थिक विकास को अवरुद्ध करके पूरी शक्ति सनातनी परम्परा को मिटाने में लगा दी । मेरे पिछले लेख में ग्राफ पर ध्यान दें，मध्ययुग के आरम्भ से ही भारत का जो पतन आरम्भ हुआ था वह १९६४ ई⋅ तक जारी रहा，नेहरू के मरते ही भारत ने विश्व अर्थव्यवस्था में अपना स्थान सुधारना आरम्भ कर दिया । via Vinay Jha on FB
