💔 SOMETIMES COMPASSION MEANS FIGHTING TO SAVE A LIFE, AND SOMETIMES IT MEANS FINDING THE COURAGE TO LET GO. 💔
🐴 Adelaire lost his left eye when he was just a baby. But that didn't stop him from living a wonderful, wild life. He learned to navigate his world with just one eye, and he did just fine like that for a decade.
🥺But a few months ago, Adelaire injured his remaining right eye, and started having trouble. We monitored him closely, hoping the eye would heal as they sometimes do. But he started running into barbed-wire fences, and this week, he could no longer find his way to the river. It was heartbreaking to witness. He would follow the other horses, but then a stallion would attack him, and he ended up alone unable to find his way out of the fencing.
The other day, we had to cut some of the barbed wire and guided him back to the river, which we did succesfully, and he was so happy to get a drink and eat eelgrass. But we knew total blindness is impossible in the wild. When we found him stuck and running into things once more, we had to find the strength to make the right decision, and we called the AZDA.
🌈To prevent a worse death, we gave him a kind one. Adelaire was humanely euthanized yesterday. Rest in Peace brave one. 🕊️
We know this is heartbreaking, especially for those who love these horses as deeply as we do. But please understand that allowing nature to take its course is not always a good choice. When an animal is frightened, helpless, and suffering, it is a great kindness to end it.
🐴 Adelaire was the son of Aquarius and Brahms.
We could not give him more years. But we could give him one gift: an instant, dignified passing over the rainbow. 🌈
Should you ever have to make a tough choice, remember that the kindness of ending suffering, is the greatest act of compassion.
💟With hugs to our supporters, SRWHMG.
🩺 P.S. After Adelaire's passing, we examined his remaining eye closely. His pupil was no longer there and the eye was essentially a ball of infection about to explode. It must have been terribly painful for him. Seeing the condition only confirmed that we had made the right choice.
➡️We could have left him out there, knowing that eventually he would simply disappear. That would have been easier for us, but it would not have been right. Being wild should not mean being left to suffer when there is no hope of recovery.

🕊️ DON'T CRY FOR ME, MY WHOLE LIFE WAS WILD AND FREE.
We are sorry to inform everyone that our beloved Faith, one of the oldest Salt River wild horses, has passed on. But instead of being sad, we invite you to celebrate her beautiful long wild life with us.
These days, there is something rare and amazing about a wild horse being born free, living free, lovingly raising 8 offspring, growing old in freedom, and passing peacefully in the home she knew.
It is literally why we do what we do. Faith was managed humanely, which means that she did not need to continue bearing foals in her older days. PZP fertility control gave her that break, and we know it contributed to her living a few more quality serene years.
Sweet Faith passed on her own, and from what we observed, quite peacefully. She was lethargic, but her heartbeat was not high and she did not appear in severe pain or distress. Her lead stallion, Rascal/Citrine, defended her from other stallions until the very end, and our hearts go out to him for his loss.
Faith outlived 3 of her own offspring, but still has 5 offspring in the herd, which she had with Wisdom and later with Champ. The adorable foal in this picture by SRWHMG Rick Blandford, is Serenity, born in 2019, now a healthy 7 year old mare. We had already left her "open" for future offspring, which we are so glad about.
🐴 How old was she exactly? The first photographs we have of Faith, date to 2005, where she was already a fully grown mare in them. We therefore assigned her an approximate birth year of 2001, although she could have been born much earlier. So Faith lived to be at least 25 years old, possibly older, because her teeth certainly showed very old age. In 2014, Simone produced and released a short documentary about the plight of the Salt River wild horses, and Faith and Wisdom were center stage. You can watch it in a link in the comments!
🌿 This is what protecting wild horses and managing them humanely is all about: giving horses like Faith the right to live their entire lives in freedom. Faith was never chased by helicopters, separated from her babies, or loaded onto a slaughter truck. She also never felt the pain of a whip, the pressure to perform, or the confinement of a 12-by-12-foot stall. Instead, she knew nothing but pure freedom, living her life exactly as she chose to.
Faith will stay in her home and go back to the earth, just as nature intended. So if you happen to come across her body, plesse don't be sad, but celebrate her beautiful wild and free life.
If you support humane wild horse management, please take a second to click subscribe on this page! It helps us keep up our programs!
🕊️❤️RUN FOREVER FREE, FAITH! 🐎
Thank You, SRWHMG.

❤️KEEPINGTHEM WILD TAKES MORE THAN YOUR LIKE, it takes everyone pitching in, just a little!
This🚨 is an urgent hay fundraiser, and you may read stress between the lines, because keeping up our programs with the rising hayprices and losing many sponsorships at the same time, is an enormous setback.
🆘 So we beg you to please stop scrolling for a second to read and share, if you care....
✅️SRWHMG has been feeding the Salt River wild horses since May, without holding a single fundraiser, but with many lost sponsorships we are out of operating funds and we urgently need TWO SEMILOADS OF HAY, now costing $17,800!
One🚛 semiload has already been used, but not paid for, and we already need the next one. We are worried, and yet we know that if everyone who loves these horses chipped in for just ONE bale of hay ($20), we would never run out!
😢Unfortunately, many people will scroll past this to enjoy the pretty pictures and videos, without realizing what it actually takes to keep these horses here. There is a constant financial worry of keeping our word to the AZDA.
💔We have had many sponsorships cancelations and while we understand that circumstances change, we cannot just stop feeding the horses. We are committed to keeping these horses wild and free. But we cannot do it without you.
🙏Please remember we receive no government funding; we offer these programs just to keep them wild and free. Everything we do depends on donations of people who want to see these horses here forever.
🫶We hope you will consider pitching in for the Salt River wild horses! We will do all the work with love, but we cannot do it alone!
🐎 If you love seeing the Salt River wild horses, we hope you'll consider buying just ONE bale of hay, which will feed one family band today. And if you can give more, it will make an even bigger difference! And if you really can't, please share it with at least a couple of friends, who might!
❤️ THE HORSES ARE COUNTING ON US, AND WE'RE COUNTING ON YOU! Thank You for your support!

P.S. The supplemental feeding is an important part of our contract. It helps to keep the horses from going hungry, but it also serves to:
• 🌿 Reduce grazing pressure on the environment and,🌵 Encourage the horses to utilize their entire habitat instead of concentrating along the river.
📌 please share! Thank you so much. SRWHMG.

They don't need anything or anyone, except they need to be treated humanely. Thunder and his mom can sleep peacefully, because the Salt River herd is humanely managed, by us.
But what about all the other babies born this year on other public lands? They are still chased with helicopters for miles and miles. We strive to make a difference for all wild horses everywhere. Join our important mission. Subscribe. Thank you so much. SRWHMG.

🧓❤️CELEBRATING ONE OF OUR OLDIES! 🐴
Seeing foals grow up wild and free is amazing—but there is something just as special about watching them live their lives through the seasons and grow old the way they were meant to, in the wild.
This is retired lead stallion Diego on the right, now at least 26 years old and becoming frail. ❤️ Walking along with him is Heath, his grandson out of Butterscotch, through his son Steven. Through our decades of monitoring of the Salt River herd, we know these horses, their family lines and their relationships—and we’ve watched Diego from his young bachelor days, to running a band with Shadowfax and later taking it over, to him retiring, and then roaming alone, as retired lead stallions do. However, this year, Heath has been staying close to his grandfather, keeping him company and protecting him. It is incredibly sweet to witness.
Diego has sired a strong line of offspring in the Tonto National Forest, including Steven and several other lead and lieutenant stallions, such as Carmel, Garrett, Scratch, Luna, Nugget and Solo. 🐴 Moonfire, who is almost a year old now, is his grandson through Garrett. With upcoming genetic research, it will be fascinating to learn and confirm just how much of Diego’s DNA runs through the Salt River herd today!
Long live the old Salt River wild horses—and cheers to keeping them wild and free for their entire lives. 🥂
SRWHMG, for every Salt River wild horse.

What a storm today! Our little Thunder survived his first thunder!

🔎 COMPARE THESE TWO POSTS AND DECIDE FOR YOURSELF
✍️On July 17, 2026, one of our content volunteers, Pam B., published our post about Sapphire—her complete heterochromia, the role of melanin, her history with Shadowfax, her offspring and her family relationships.
🔜 Low and behold, barely two months later, on September 15, John Mack "" published Sapphire as “HIS” Tuesday Tribute on his "Salt River Truth" page, where btw we can rarely find any percentage of the Truth.
🟰 The post is: Same horse. Same unusual characteristic: complete heterochromia.
Same explanation involving melanin.
Same connection to Shadowfax.
Same focus on her offspring and family relationships.
(The only difference is him closing with a WRONG assumption of a connection to Rascal/Citrine, who has a blue eye, but no genealogical relation to Sapphire.)
🚫 But we can find no credit to SRWHMG—or anyone else—as the source.
🐴 Now imagine dedicating your life—more than 20 years—to fighting for these wild horses, organizing their histories and documenting everything you can about them. Imagine designing an app to preserve that information because you know it is important for their protection. Imagine seeing every one of them born, watching many of them die, being there when they are injured or in danger, feeding them through drought, raising the money to care for them, and doing it year after year because without this work, they could not continue to exist here.
✅ We don't normally toot our own horn, but that is what Simone and the volunteers of SRWHMG have done—creating a humane way to manage these wild horses while keeping them in their home. We designed this government/NGO partnership and continue to offer it for free. Our media work exposed the threat of removal, our legislative work got the Salt River Horse Act passed, our legal work won court battle after court battle, our field work kept the herd’s population under control, and our professionalism with the government continues to keep it in place. All of this combined is what is needed to keep these treasured horses here.
⚠️ That is why this goes far beyond being opportunistic and unfair. John Mack runs Salt River Truth, and started his own non profit, even without having to bear the cost of managing the horses. According to our records, he did not end his non profit or return donations, after he found out he did not win the contract to manage them. According to our screenshots he even raised funds to feed them, which we then never received to actually feed them. He publicly attacks SRWHMG and quite literally told people not to trust us, but donate to him instead, while using our original work and documented information to build his own posts and credibility, without giving us credit.
📌 And before anyone says it: No, these horses do not “belong” to SRWHMG, and we have never claimed they do. And yes, many wonderful photographers photograph them, share their observations and help tell their stories. We love and appreciate them for it and they love and appreciate us as well.
♻️But the horses and the work documenting them are two different things. Nobody owning the horses does not mean nobody owns their own photographs, writing, research, databases or original work. We WANT people talking about these horses and sharing information. What we object to is someone taking information others spent years gathering, presenting it as their own without credit, while publicly attacking the organization whose work they are using.
⚠️ You cannot publicly tear down the people doing the work and then quietly rely on that same work to build yourself up.

🐴 ADORABLE! DID YOU KNOW WHAT THIS MEANS?
Have you ever seen a foal rapidly open and close its mouth when meeting another horse? Its pretty adorable behavior and is called clacking, also known as snapping or champing—and it has an important message.
Foals often do this when encountering an unfamiliar or higher-ranking horse, especially when they feel a little intimidated. In simple horse language, it basically means: “I’m little, I’m innocent, I’m not a threat, please don’t hurt me!”
🔬 Researchers generally describe clacking as an appeasement behavior. Interestingly, foals may even initiate an interaction and then clack, so it isn't necessarily a response to aggression—it can be a way of communicating that they are not a threat.
❤️ This adorable video of little Thunder is a perfect example. Thunder daringly walks up to Tado, a stallion from another band, and begins clacking at him. While Tado could have hurt him, he seems to understand the message perfectly and responds by being very gentle with the little guy. It’s a beautiful example of how horses communicate with each other!
Sorry that the video is a little blurry, it was in the dark from far away! Thank you to our volunteer Christine B for catching this, and thank you everyone for watching and thank you for sharing!

HERE’S WHAT WE WOULD NOT SEE IF WE DIDN’T MONITOR THEM THIS CLOSELY… 💔
This poor young momma, who lost her foal yesterday, is so obviously grieving.
If you don’t see it, your eyes may not be working. If you don’t feel it, your heart may not be alright.
These are sentient animals with deep feelings. They form bonds, they experience loss, and they grieve. And that is why we've worked so hard to make sure they are treated humanely.
After losing her baby, Jewell’s entire band traveled 4 miles from the river back to the Hills last night. This morning, they are here at our Hills feed station. (We kind of wish they had done that last week and we may have been able to help.)
Because we never saw Jewell’s baby alive, we can only guess at what happened. So we are taking the baby to Midwestern University for a necropsy. We are hoping that we can get some answers—and perhaps give everyone some closure.
We have, of course, seen this before, in our 20 years of record keeping and our 10 years of managing this herd. Thats how we know that Jewell will be okay. We usually see a mare lose weight after losing a foal, but after about two weeks, they typically begin to pick that weight back up.
Our hearts are with sweet Jewell today. 💔
But more than anything, we are just grateful that she is alive and ok.
BTW the BS from the talkers continues as they are desperately trying to credit people who do nothing but plagiarize our hard work and bash our group any chance they get. They found out what we were doing and rushed to post it for attention, and to divert information with their own phone #, that's definitely not to help. No, we don't own this herd and don't act like that of course, but we do own the work we do, and the work we have done for 20 years, and you would never know about any of it, if it wasn't for us. Wouldn't it be nice if some people could manage to have a little acknowledgement that these horses would not be here without us? Wouldn't it be nice if they stated, where they learned their information? Wishful thinking maybe, or maybe we have just had enough if it.
For Jewell. For her baby. And for every Salt River wild horse. ❤️
Thank you,
SRWHMG

We bring good news and bad news! 💔
Some of you asked us about posts you saw saying Jewell was missing, calling her “Moonstone.” Those posts did not come from SRWHMG, the official management group for the Salt River wild horses, and they had the wrong phone number posted for people to call and provide information.
However, it is true that we were searching for Jewell, because she was not with her band yesterday, and she was expected to give birth to a foal any day now.
The really good news is that Jewell is alive!! ❤️
The really bad news is that she lost a baby boy. We just found him deceased. 💔
We are currently investigating why he may have died and what possibly happened. But we are so glad Jewell is ok, and she will have the chance to have healthy offspring one day.
Further explanation:
We usually don't immediately announce when a horse is missing for several reasons:
1. We don't want to panic the public the second a horse goes missing, because it could very well be just fine.
2. It doesn't help to have well-meaning people searching, approaching horses, and potentially interfering with our systematic search.
3. When our field team is busy searching, we don't have time to answer a ton of questions.
4. Unfortunately, those posts also directed people to other phone numbers instead of our official hotline, which can prevent important information from reaching our search team.
5. We are banned from those pages so we cannot actually answer the questions they are asking!
We will always keep you informed, and we will always search for a horse until we have closure.
Here is the video of Jewell, safe with her mother Sapphire, at our feed station.
We are sure she is heartbroken. The baby appears to have been alive for a day or so, and we will investigate further to determine the cause of death.
Please follow the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group page for correct information and always check with us first. If you see people asking questions on other pages, please ask them to contact the management group.
Thank you so much for following us, the people who do the actual work.
Our hearts are with Jewell tonight. 🐴❤️
