Learn about the motivation and design for a post-quantum upgrade on #Bitcoin's #Lightning Network:

💥 NEW: First working post-quantum Lightning prototype released
> East Texas A&M team built PQLN, a hybrid ML-DSA and ML-KEM upgrade for Lightning’s off-chain messages.
> It protects gossip, transport, invoices, onions, and offers without changing Bitcoin consensus.
> rust-lightning fork works with unmodified nodes; extra crypto time is under 0.33 ms.
> Main cost is bandwidth: gossip grows about 10×, or 4× with smaller Falcon signatures.
> On-chain channel keys stay exposed; this is research code, not a production upgrade.
Hey @TheBlueMatt @benthecarman @_tnull would you guys or anyone from the LDK team would be interested in reviewing the PQLN codebase?

A quantum-safe Bitcoin upgrade would still leave five Lightning functions exposed, according to a new research preprint. Payment privacy would need separate protection.
The researchers’ PQLN prototype addresses those gaps, but its default design used 10.2x more gossip download data in full-network sync tests. It remains experimental and does not protect the on-chain keys securing channel funds.

Researchers Build Post-Quantum Defense for Lightning
Researchers at East Texas A&M University have developed PQLN, a research prototype designed to protect Bitcoin Lightning’s off-chain communications from future quantum attacks.
PQLN adds post-quantum cryptography to Lightning’s gossip, invoices, offers and payment routing while keeping existing nodes and Bitcoin consensus unchanged.
The system uses NIST’s ML-DSA and ML-KEM standards alongside existing Lightning cryptography. Researchers found the main trade-off was bandwidth, with gossip traffic increasing by around 10×.
The important part: PQLN protects Lightning’s off-chain messaging, not the BTC locked in payment channels. Making those funds quantum-safe would still require changes at the Bitcoin base layer.
PQLN is currently a research implementation, not a live network-wide upgrade.
Thank you for the mention!

lightning on x402
Block has joined the x402 Foundation, an open standard for agentic payments, to help build the rails that will let people, businesses, and agents pay and get paid.
We’ve also contributed Bitcoin Lightning payments, which is purpose-built for the instant, low-cost, high-volume payments that agentic commerce will depend on.
