Overview: Societal challenges, such as those at the heart of CSCW research, are often complex, and responses to them frequently prioritize harm reduction and prevention as immediate goals. While these efforts are essential, they can unintentionally narrow our sense of what is possible, centering our attention on mitigating risks rather than expanding possibilities.
Excited to share our @ACM_CSCW 2024 in-person workshop on envisioning new futures of positive social technology! We'll explore CSCW research outside of the existing platforms/paradigms for social tech: current research, promising directions, and how to support each other's work.

DHS agents detained Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian activist & Columbia University student last night, declaring his visa had been revoked.
Khalil has a green card - not a visa - & is a lawful permanent resident. DHS appeared confused by this news & detained him anyway.

I agree & will add this: something increasingly alarming to me about the "AI safety" communities (and I say this w/ a *lot* of empathy) is that they're not particularly well read. As in, if you look at any "curriculum" or paper, esp re: policy, the oldest cite is from like 2020

TikTok Files Emergency Motion for Injunction
Today, we filed an emergency motion for an injunction to stop the TikTok Ban from taking effect on January 19, 2025 until our appeal of the decision by the Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit is heard by the US Supreme Court.
TikTok is, at its core, its 170 million American users. Estimates show that small businesses on TikTok would lose more than $1 billion in revenue and creators would suffer almost $300 million in lost earnings in just one month unless the TikTok Ban is halted. In 2023 alone, the advertising, marketing, and organic reach on TikTok contributed $24.2 billion, and TikTok’s own operations contributed an additional $8.5 billion to the U.S. GDP.
