Shigella infections are now considered 'endemic' in some communities of gay, bisexual, & other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). Several of the strains transmitted in these communities have become resistant to multiple antibiotics, & some are now superbugs on the edge of becoming untreatable. The CA Department of Public Health says that the best way to prevent Shigella infection from sex is to not have sex with someone who has had diarrhea in the last 2 weeks. It is also advised to use barriers during oral & anal sex, as well as washing up before & after sex; anyone who suspects they may have Shigella should get tested & seek treatment..."
