Angelina may not have invented the Mont-Blanc, but few Paris addresses are more closely associated with it today. Made with chestnut cream, whipped cream and meringue, the dessert was already known in Paris before Angelina opened its tea room on rue de Rivoli in 1903. But Mont-Blanc quickly became one of the house’s signature creations and has remained on the menu ever since. Founded by Austrian confectioner Antoine Rumpelmayer, Angelina’s famous Paris address is at 226 rue de Rivoli, just beside the Tuileries Garden. Its Belle Époque interior became part of the experience, attracting famous names including Marcel Proust and Coco Chanel. The dessert takes its name from Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps. Its combination of crisp meringue, soft whipped cream and rich chestnut cream makes it particularly tempting as autumn and winter arrive in Paris. And then there is Angelina’s other great temptation: the legendary hot chocolate.
