Incredible new therapeutic system : genetically engineer gut bacteria to deliver treatments. Here they express a set of genes that lets them break down oxalate (which can form kidney stones)

The 1st IVF baby in USA Elizabeth Carr's parents never knew that the 42 tries before them had failed until the day they told her she was pregnant ... context as we debate new innovations that are "unproven" PS she works for 1st co to offer polygenic screening @genomic_pred

Man has life saved by Grok @xai - the biggest lesson here is not that the AI knew the tests (that was basic medicine) but as he says it gave him the language to communicate that to the provers to have them take him seriously . Gaslighting patient in pain is epidemic especially in women's reproductive heath (endometriosis) - a new use for AI by patients - to get Drs. to listen
Man has his life saved by Grok from @xAI after a ruptured appendix: "I’m 49. 2025 has been the best year of my life… until two nights ago. For 24 straight hours I had constant, razor-blade-level pain in my stomach. Couldn’t lie flat, could only get minor relief sitting on the floor with knees to chest. No fever, no blood, nothing dramatic on the outside. Went to the ER once, doctor pressed my belly, said it was soft, gave me Somac (acid blocker) and sent me home. Pain never dropped below an 8/10. Came home, opened a year-long chat I have with Grok, described everything. Grok immediately flagged perforated ulcer or atypical appendicitis, told me the exact red-flag pattern I was describing, and basically said “go back right now and ask for a CT.” I copied the symptoms and the reasoning, walked back to the ER, told them: “This is what I’m experiencing, this is why I think it’s serious, I want a CT.” They did it. Appendix was inflamed and close to rupturing. Six-hour laparoscopic surgery later, it’s out. Pain is 100 % gone. I woke up laughing about anesthesia. I’m alive and healed because an AI recognized the pattern when the first exam missed it, and because I had the exact words to make them take me seriously the second time. If you’re reading this while curled up in pain, googling symptoms at 3 a.m., and someone already sent you home once, please don’t wait."

I am naming this new medical use of AI LLM products the "AI Medical Advocate" (you heard it here 1st!) - using AI not to get medical INFO but to know the inside buzz words expert lingo to get medical providers to LISTEN to you and take proper action @elonmusk @xai As a physician this is an equally lifesaving secret power in medical interactions.

the sad side of this is a medical student should have known better how to evaluate this case and made the proper diagnosis. I am a fertility doctor had same course with my wife -- took her to ER they pressed n belly said it was fine wrong spot - so I said no it is typical appy press HERE get a CBC and CT and they instantly made diagnosis. AI as partner in health care use would have flagged missing tests but the provider needs to interpret the patient and severe pain is a flag.

It ain’t what you don’t know that will kill you. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so. (Mark Twain revised for modern medicine)
President Eisenhower warned us about the military industrial complex. He failed to warn us about the medical industrial complex which recommended the low fat, high carb diet that eventually helped kill him.

Participants in our clinical trials have extended digital computer control to physical devices such as assistive robotic arms. Over time, we plan to expand the range of devices controllable via Neuralink.

GLP-1 can be lifesaving but before we envision a world with everyone on meds for life why hasn't WHO 1st endorsed the lifestyle changes and carbohydrate restriction that is equally effective for weight loss @DoctorTro

landmark IVF innovations launched before we had prospective trials of safety and outcomes - we have a long history : 1) IVF itself 2) embryo cryopreservation 3) ICSI 4) Embryo aneuploidy testing PGT-A 5) Medication stim protocols no one wants to be randomized to placebo trial

IVF history genetic innovations that didn't work or incorrectly understood-problem is patients do not want randomization 1) day 3 single blastomere PGTA 2) mitoscore for embryo selection 3) low mosaic embryo assumed non viable we must innovate but verify the tech works

New ASRM Ethics committee publication rejects embryo polygenic screening for traits elective & not within scope of IVF practice - yet elective sex selection (a trait) & elective surrogacy ARE ethically permitted in past opinions from same comm. How are these 2 consistent ?

Genome vs exome sequencing vs genotyping explained
I found it surprisingly hard to find a simple visual explainer of the difference between genome sequencing, exome sequencing, and genotyping. So I made one for this piece:
