Delighted to share these first reactions to my new book, The Trash Collector, coming in February ‘27.
Favorite first viewings for October:
This Night I’ll Posess Your Corpse (Marins, 1967)
Bramayugam (Sadasivan, 2024)
The Appointment (Vickers, 1982)
Tumbbad (Barve, 2018)
Wasn’t prepared for the Dog Stars to be so sad. I went in blind, expecting a war movie from the poster. It’s more like a live-action Miyazaki movie about flying around in a little plane with an old dog and grieving. Feels very personal for Ridley.
Immaculate October vibes from new Wolves in the Throne Room album. Their marketing copy for it is also amazing:
Revisited this occult procedural from 2016 and it holds up extremely well. Currently available on shudder and highly recommended for your October viewing pleasure.
The tourists are mostly gone, the water temp is dropping, and the big fish are getting active. Best time of year in Montana.
September favorite first viewings:
By the Bluest of Seas (Boris Barnet, 1936)
War and Peace (King Vidor, 1956)
Mandingo (Richard Fleischer, 1975)
The Girl in the Red Velvet Swing (Richard Fleischer, 1955)
Shockingly few people logging Georgia Bernstein’s NIGHT NURSE, even though it’s been on streaming for quite a while. Don’t complain that contemporary movies aren’t freaky enough if you’re going to skip this one!
Netflix Lizzie Borden is the apotheosis of streaming trash. Pro-murder, maximalist style, unhinged performances (esp. Rebecca Hall), “Cherry Bomb” menstruation needle drop. Sort of a Portrait of a Lady on Fire riff, but central themes include “why an axe rather than a knife?”
I found it very implausible in Camp Miasma that she would leave on two hotel room lamps with direct glare on the TV while watching a slasher movie.

Mass resentment about the rising cost of college should focus on administrative bloat, which has reached a new level of outrageousness, as Barry documents here.
An opinion I wrote for the Boston Globe is out. It cites eight and nine figure software purchases as part of administrative bloat 2.0 in higher education. Free version. globecollegetown.substack.co…
Particularly intrigued by this Tsukamoto movie at Venice. I looked up the Letterboxd reviews after noticing a couple walkouts on the Moirée grid…
