A delight writing for the @BFI DVD release of this pioneering TV partnership between Spike Milligan and Richard Lester.. an essential part of the story of the Beatles films, A Hard Day’s Night and Help!
***RELEASE DETAILS***
Coming on December 7th on Blu-ray/DVD dual format in the UK from @BFI: #TheGoonsAtRediffusion (1956-1958)!
In the mid-1950s, four outstanding Associated-Rediffusion television shows - The Idiot Weekly, Price 2d, A Show Called Fred, Son of Fred and Yes, It's the Cathode-Ray Tube Show!– adapted the brilliantly bizarre humour of BBC radio comedy The Goon Show into visual form.
Initially innovatively overseen by director Richard Lester and starring Peter Sellers and Spike Milligan, but only broadcast in the London region, these supremely silly and surreal sketch shows remain the most uproariously successful attempts to capture the quicksilver genius of the Goons on the telly-box.
This long-overdue box set gathers together all available archival material that still exists from these shows – newly scanned and re-presented in the best possible quality, for new generations of comedy fans to enjoy.
Also included is a lavish array of hens’- teeth rarities, featuring members of the Goons or their entourage, also from the Associated-Rediffusion collection, much of which appears here on disc for the very first time.

Happy Birthday to Sam Raimi 🎉
Sam’s signature style of frantic camerawork, off-kilter humor and cartoonish, over-the-top violence has been recognized and praised by his contemporaries and fledgling auteurs. Starting off as an indie filmmaker, he was no stranger to adversity and was familiar with the challenges of making a movie, thus he became incredibly resourceful and practical. Raimi, a fan of comic book stories, immediately got in touch with Sony Pictures back in 2000 when they were looking for a director for their new Spider-Man film. His passion for the character was infectious, and Sony knew he was right for the role. Sam continues to direct and produce films, entertaining both longtime fans and the average filmgoer.
He is 67-years-old today!
