The pilots on this private jet were on the radio with air traffic control while it fell from higher than Mount Everest to a Florida street in about 80 seconds. You can hear them realize they aren't going to make it. Their trouble started right after a request that sounds totally reasonable. They asked to fly higher. This was a Learjet 60 carrying nine people from Austin to the Bahamas, a little over two hours into the trip. When they checked in with Miami Center at 35,000 feet, they were getting bounced around hard enough to swing their altitude 600 to 700 feet. They also had a thin layer of clear ice on the plane that the pilot called manageable. It was minus 47 Celsius outside. Then it started precipitating, so they asked to climb to 37,000 to get out of it, and Miami said okay. Climbing out of bad weather is standard stuff for pilots, and up that high it comes with a catch most of us have never heard of. The air is so thin that a jet has a weirdly small window of speeds it can safely fly. Go too slow and the wings stop holding it up, and if you go too fast, shockwaves start forming on the wings. Every thousand feet you climb, those two limits squeeze a little closer together. Pilots literally call the spot where they meet the coffin corner. A Learjet 60 normally cruises right around Mach 0.76, and its limit is 0.81. So even on a calm day it's flying pretty close to the edge, and turbulence knocks your airspeed up and down inside that window. Within seconds of starting the climb, the tracking data shows their groundspeed jumping from 437 to 505 knots as the jet started falling at almost 20,000 feet per minute. The pilot's mayday said the same thing. "We are in an overspeed condition, descending 20,000 feet per minute." Another call said they were banking. When you get those two at once, things get ugly fast. Once a jet blows past its speed limit, the wing can start pushing the nose down by itself, which adds speed, which pushes the nose down even harder. If the wings are tilted on top of that, the lift that normally holds the nose up is pointing off to the side. The nose keeps dropping and the plane winds into a spiral. Your gut tells you to pull back on the controls, and with the wings banked that mostly just tightens the spiral. You're supposed to level the wings first and only then pull up. Now try doing that inside a cloud where you can't see the horizon while the overspeed alarm is going off. By 12:49 Eastern they were down to 8,750 feet and dropping more than 32,000 feet per minute. That works out to about 360 miles an hour, straight down. At that speed the last 8,750 feet goes by in around 16 seconds. The dashcam video shows the jet coming in nearly vertical over Military Trail, with cars still driving on the road under it. It hit right next to a mobile home park. About 600 people who live there are being moved out, and officials say nobody on the ground was hurt, which is honestly hard to believe when you watch that fireball. The NTSB will probably take a year or more to officially say what caused this. The last thing on the radio was the controller repeating their tail number, November seven two two Bravo Delta, over and over, with nobody left to answer.
BREAKING: New footage captures the aircraft crash in Greenacres, Florida. Preliminary information suggests the aircraft that crashed is a business jet.

I keep hearing about the improved homicide rates in BHM. Any improvement deserves to be acknowledged. But I can’t help but notice that 97% of the victims are black. This is a travesty & hard to explain away w/ phrases like “one act of violence,” unrelated to city culture. And “we can’t arrest our way out of it” sounds defeatist when it’s the best tool you have.
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said Saturday’s violence should not “overshadow 85 years of legacy” at the Magic City Classic. A 19-year-old was killed and eight others wounded in two shootings near Legion Field.

Fans loved college football because of the tradition and the strong university connection. The transformation into a second tier professional league ruined that—it is slowly deteriorating into the football equivalent of AAA baseball. The Toledo Mud Hens don't draw 80k people.

The unthinkable happened. They turned college athletics into pro's and tore out any semblances of 'rivalries'. And the old timers who warned this would happen were right. Wait until next year when it REALLY sinks in.

Charles Barkley says he and Ernie Johnson were ready to retire last year, until EJ told him continuing Inside the NBA on ESPN would mean hundreds of coworkers could keep their jobs “I was done after last year, and I think Ernie was done. We lost a package to NBC.’ And we both met with NBC, and I met with Amazon. I’m like, ‘You know what? I’m good. I’m 63 years old. I’m good.’” “And then I get a call from Ernie telling us that ESPN wants to buy the show, and I said, ‘What do you think?’ He said, ‘Well, we talking a couple hundred people get to keep their jobs.’” “And I said, ‘I would consider that because I love the people I work with. I would consider that if everybody’s going to keep their job. But Ernie, I don’t want to drop dead on TV. I want to drop dead on the 13th fairway.’”

The Empire in "Star Wars" is bad because they created a weapon entirely for the purpose of annihilating entire populated planets and killing billions of people. The original trilogy has a very black and white Saturday-morning cartoon morality. It was only when Lucas came back to it as an older man and actually started thinking about the question of why Anakin Skywalker would abandon the Jedi to join the Dark Side that he really began to add complexity to it. And considering the OT was made by a boomer white guy lefty who was slyly suggesting in the 1970s that the Vietcong were the good guys, the prequels function as a pretty sharp critique of democracy. The Republic is completely paralyzed by competing factions trying to extract rents for their constituents at everyone else's expense, and anyone trying to get anything productive done has to do complex horse-trading involving paying wasteful graft to these interests in order to build a coalition for their policies. This is what all the Trade Federation nonsense in Phantom Menace is about. And while the Republic was trying to keep all these disparate interests united by paying off special interests, its entire structure got turned inside out by Palpatine. And the Jedi were too preoccupied with running nonsense errands on behalf of the Republic Senate and being sent around the galaxy like rent-a-cops to solve problems for the various factions that they didn't notice any of this happening. And the reason that Anakin was susceptible to corruption by Palpatine is that the Jedi and the Republic didn't offer him any possibility of a good life. They bound him to a code of celibacy and service to these grubby little factions and their dysfunctional, wasteful, corrupt government. And that's supposed to be good, because, what, democracy? Honestly I can see how a politician like Palpatine who spent his career in Republic institutions might reasonably decide that fascism enforced with a planet-destroying space laser would be a superior system. Of course, Palpatine sucked too. Anakin didn't get anything he was promised in exchange for betraying the Jedi. He still lost his family and he got turned into a cyborg terminator, and it didn't even work out that well for Palpatine, whose engagement with the dark side of the Force turned him into a cryptkeeper. But things didn't go much better for Obi Wan, who spent the rest of his life squatting in a hut in the desert. And even the sequel trilogy (if you consider that canon), the galaxy immediately turned into a mess after the Empire fell, the new Republic had all the same problems the old one did and Luke's commitment to the Jedi ideals got him the same crappy life Obi Wan had. "Star Wars" ended up being about how everything is terrible no matter what you do.
Nobody has made a convincing argument the Empire in Star Wars is actually bad. They run clean organized starships and create trillions of jobs across the galaxy. When the Jedi run the government - an unelected council that somehow has infinite money to build giant buildings and own fleets of starships - Coruscant still has a redlight district with drugs like death sticks. Either keep civilizational order by nuking rogue planets, or be slaves to sexless fake Jesus types who slice you with laser swords with impunity.
