There's a debate raging among Middle East experts on how to think about the future of the region, with one prominent view being that it's splitting into two blocs. Today, the @AtlanticCouncil published my alternative hypothesis in a new piece, entitled: "The new Middle East is modular: what the two bloc thesis of the region misses". I welcome hearing your thoughts, as well!

Let’s all celebrate Captain Smit Machchhar, the Indian Pilot that - after being stabbed by his Omani co-pilot on a flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv- managed to issue an emergency code and open the cockpit door, to allow passengers to help neutralize the terrorist, regain control of the plane as the terrorist co-pilot sought to crash the plane, and land the plane in Saudi Arabia, where the crew and passengers all received care.
Just imagine being in his position and managing to turn the tables, and save not just 150 passengers, but also avoid giving terrorists a perverse “win.”
To Smith Machchhar - and to the courageous group that neutralized the terrorist - we are all indebted for your strength and courage.
Let’s all unite and Build Together, and not allow Destroyers to Tear humanity apart.

Rachel and Jon Goldberg-Polin have issued a new call to action, urging President Trump and his Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff to push for the release of all hostages held in Gaza "this week.”
"Our plea to you right now is, now that you've done the hard part of getting movement, getting a deal started, let's not think about phase one and phase two and phase three and many months," Jon Goldberg-Polin said. "Let's think bigger and faster."
"All 76 hostages out this week. End of war. Who benefits from dragging it out for so long? Not the people of this region. Let's get it done right now."

It is now clear that the fight over the “Day After” has become @IsraeliPM's line-in-the-sand, the issue on which the current Israel government rises or falls. If the #Biden Administration shifts gears, this is also a far more appropriate issue on which to stand its ground than the operational critique of how (not whether) Israel should dismantle Hamas battalions in #Rafah.
Remember: the premise of “Day After” is #Hamas’ defeat. This is not a debate – as some mischievous observers suggest – over preserving Hamas, saving Hamas or protecting Hamas. Quite the contrary. The “Day After” debate is over #Israel’s practical vision for security and governance in #Gaza in a post-Hamas environment.
The reason to lay it out now is:
a) to give local #Palestinians confidence that there is a realistic post-Hamas future so they don’t have to reconcile themselves to a perpetual whack-a-mole strategy in which Hamas continually lives to fight another day. In that environment, they will never join the fight against Hamas, actively or passively;
b) to give Israeli troops and the nation they represent confidence that there is a reachable objective in mind so they too are not consigned to a de facto “Groundhog Day” mission of returning to Jabalia and Khan Younis time and time again because their government has not defined an alternative;
c) to give Arab and other international actors confidence to invest now in assets and resources to build a reasonable, achievable post-Hamas alternative, a process that itself will feed a desire for real change by local Palestinians;
d) to give American friends of Israel – in the @WhiteHouse, Congress and throughout the US political/policy system – confidence that Israel’s impressive battlefield achievement, which would not have been possible without massive US support, is matched by an inspired political/security strategy whose long-term success will also require massive US support.
Destroy Hamas, as @netanyahu says – that is a legitimate objective that the US should support and assist. But there is no logical reason to hold up defining a real plan for what comes next. @netanyahu’s equation of “Hamastan” and “Fatahstan” is political advocacy, not analytical assessment; as the @IDF will tell you, the #PalestinianAuthority – for all its real and serious faults – has played a key role in ensuring that Sinwar’s goal of expanding the war from Gaza to the West Bank has so far failed. This does not, by any stretch, mean the return of #AbuMazen to Gaza or "replacing" Hamas-rule with PA-rule, as Netanyahu suggested; but it also doesn’t mean that there can be no whiff of connection between the PA and what will emerge in a post-Hamas Gaza.
The US has a strong interest in having a Day After plan proposed by Israel and agreed by Jerusalem, Arab capitals and key international organizations; this requires leadership, creativity, vision and quiet diplomacy. Failure to achieve this risks consigning both the people of Gaza and the soldiers of Israel to endless and sadly unnecessary war.

The question of whether Anti-Zionism is necessarily anti-Jewish and antisemitic is not theoretical. In practice, every society that adopted Anti-Zionism as its defining ideology ultimately became hostile to Jewish life.
The Arab world is exhibit A. They claimed to only be “Anti-Zionist” and yet within years of Anti-Zionism becoming a defining feature of Arab societies no Jews were left across the Arab world.
As we mark on Nov 30 the ethnic cleansing of Jews from the Arab world, with the knowledge that the only difference between Europe in the 1930’s and 1940’s is that the Jews of the Arab world had an Israel to go to, I’m sharing a harrowing piece by my colleague Adi Schwartz on “The Iraqi Dreyfus”, Shafiq Adas, who was hung by the Iraqis for “Zionism” despite being as far from it as possible (because that’s how Anti-Zionism works, it begins by saying it’s not about Jews, and then Jews are blamed for “Zionist sympathies”…)
PS And that’s why when Arab countries like the UAE drop Anti-Zionism they also become hospitable to Jewish life.

This Palestinian woman was released from #Israel prison. She chants: “Put a sword in front of a sword we are the men of [Hamas military commander] Muhammad Deif.” (It rhymes in Arabic)
How many Israeli women released from Hamas captivity called themselves “men” and promised more war and blood?

Today, I have a question. A pressing question. For some Western feminists.
How can you remain silent, when women and girls are raped, tortured, their bodies carried around naked and spat on by bearded men shouting Allah Akbar?
Then you can never call yourself a feminist again.
Every day, including today, some Western hypocritical feminists should be ashamed of their silence on the horror that Hamas men inflicted to women and girls on 7 October.
And that includes big names we were once proud of.
Why are their lips sealed and their hearts of stone when it comes to the excruciating pain of Jewish women?
The MeToo movement and so-called intersectional feminists do not care about all women.
If they remain silent, it means they have lied to us about their commitment to women's rights.
Their actions support the oppressor, not the victims.
Also the EU money does.
Indirectly.
Those who say nothing about these women and the hostages, should not be standing here and speaking about human rights.
When you are under attack by terrorists, a cease fire is like raising your hands when you are being shot at.
Perhaps it is worth considering that a real lasting cease fire will start with bringing back all the hostages to their homes and the rapists to justice.

For over 30 years, the wonderful Vivian Silver chose to dedicate her life to peace in the middle east. Week after week, she volunteered to transport patients from the Gaza Strip to hospitals in Israel, she initiated work training programs for Palestinians, enabling them to provide for their families with dignity, and she founded various organizations working towards the resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
When Hamas terrorists broke into her home on October 7th, she managed to text her friends that she was hiding behind the closet door. Last night, after more than a month, her body was finally identified. She was murdered.
Throughout her life, 74-year-old Vivian had extended her hand for peace with Palestinians. Ruthless Hamas terrorists grabbed that hand and took her life. If you believe in justice and compassion, don't turn away, share Vivian's story. #HamasisISIS
