The man who loves the world has no love of the Father in him. So says Scripture (1John 2:15). When trees shed leaves red, yellow, and orange, and children throw themselves onto the piles making loud with their joy and laughter; this is an excellent time to meditate on love of the world or love of the Father.

On becoming a man (fourteenth in a series) "To be a man and to become a man are separate matters." The father helping his son become a man doesn’t reduce his fatherhood to a pissing contest. He never stops loving on his son, never stops encouraging his son. He’s tender with his son. Becoming a man was hard and he remembers it acutely.

The sacramentalist pastor administers the Lord’s Supper exuberantly, dispensing vacuous flatterings, “What grace!” “What joy!” “Come!” “Take!” “Eat and drink!” “Banish all fear!” The sacramentalist pastor administers the bread and wine without the Scriptural warning, “whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.” He gags Scripture’s command, “a man must examine himself” before eating and drinking (1Corinthians 11:27-28). The sacramentalist pastor condemns this self-examination commanded by God. He disses it as “morbid introspection.”

Backyard right now. This is my Father's world, And to my listening ears All nature sings, and round me rings The music of the spheres. This is my Father's world: I rest me in the thought Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas His hand the wonders wrought.

On becoming a man (thirteenth in a series) "To be a man and to become a man are separate matters." For the Christian man, holiness and manliness are yoked together. To become holy is to become a man.

"For not knowing about God’s righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God" (Romans 10:3). "Establish their own" or "subject themselves." Are you establishing your own or subjecting yourself? Eternity hangs in the balance.

On becoming a man (twelfth in a series) "To be a man and to become a man are separate matters." To become a man, love a woman. Start with your mother, but don't stop with her. Never stop with her.

Father and his sons taking down trees, and this is less than half of his sons and daughters. A lion's pride.

Excellent. One way to check out whether we’re simply modernists incapable of thinking Biblically is reading this and asking if we think Scott’s argument is monstrous? If not, are we willing to speak thusly confessing our Christian faith by proclaiming God’s justice? conservatibbs.com/p/christa-…

On becoming a man (twelfth in a series) "To be a man and to become a man are separate matters." Today, women RULE. Face it. Becoming a man almost always requires finding a wife willing to be the wife (helpmate) and mother God made her. Today, that's difficult. Today, women rule. Plead with God for a wife. Don't marry a rebel. Wait on the Lord.

Reform is bloody. Luther knew it and stood firm: "Here I stand. I can do no other. God help me." Keep the risk reformers take in doing their dirty work in mind as you watch our President Trump. The flow of his administration has been desperately needed reforms, so cut him slack...

Kroger's now banned multiple use plastic bags (MUPG) here in Bloomington. You have dogs and kids? Good luck carrying a paper bag when you walk your dog. Good luck wrapping your toddler's dirty diaper in one. And paper bags are worse for global warming.

Excellent on Senator Sinema’s alienation of affection, adultery, and accountability for the damage her sins have done to the marriage contract, the family established by that marriage contract, and society substack.com/home/post/p-215…

On becoming a man (eleventh in a series) "To be a man and to become a man are separate matters." If a wife is her husband’s helper, his helpmate, she will help him become a man. In dancing, the man learns to be a man by studying the woman’s movements and posture. She helps him, and thus he grows in his ability to lead her.

For decades, a clique of Protestant medievalists have been selling "culture." They simply assume the building of the Christian Church and the making of Christian disciples, but their talk of "culture" is incessant. Truth, beauty, and goodness. Classical education. Theonomy. Federal Vision. Cathedrals at town center. Christian nationalism. Paedocommunion... Let us decline their invitation to hop on their bandwagon. Our Lord commanded us to "make disciples of all men"—not reclaim "Christendom." "Culture" is not the goal but the fruit. When the Church and the Gospel and Christian discipleship are our goals, Godly culture sprouts up everywhere. Godly culture is the fruit of shepherds preaching the fear of God, repentance, faith; then making disciples and teaching them to obey everthing our Lord commanded.

On becoming a man (tenth in a series) "To be a man and to become a man are separate matters." No one ever becomes a true man until he confesses his sin, repents, and believes on the True Man Whose shed blood cleanses us from all sin. True manhood is only attainable for the Christian man. Worldlings and pagans never attain it. They may try to counterfeit it. They may grab at some of its attributes or defining characteristics, but inevitably their motives for doing so are corrupt. Repentance and faith in Jesus Christ are the first steps in becoming a true man. No man or woman can ever reach the maturing and perfecting of their sex without the power of the Holy Spirit.

On becoming a man (ninth in a series) "To be a man and to become a man are separate matters." Young men are susceptible to fashions and fads. Old men are not. Why? With age comes wisdom, and part of wisdom is realizing the effeminate are intent on signalling their knowledge of fads and fashions in bourbon, trucks, clothes, influencers, music, espresso beans, hair... Young men think old men don't know what's hip because they're too old to know. They've lost the ability to keep up with styles and tastes. It never occurs to them old men aren't signalling their vanity because they've realized vanity is vain. Becoming a man requires turning away from vanity. One mark of a man becoming a man is his growing respect for old men. He studies why they're different.
