This is not the first time that @CaolanReports disrespects the work of Ukrainian journalists by using their content without permission. And then tries to make them feel guilty for demanding to respect their work and copyright.
Since a few Kyiv Independent readers have asked, I’d like to explain what happened with Caolan Robertson’s video, out of respect for our supporters. Our team found that a video on Caolan’s @CaolanReports YouTube channel included a fragment of an earlier Kyiv Independent video, used without permission and without a request for permission. It wasn’t just footage. It was an animated map that takes our team a lot of work to produce. Importantly, Caolan’s video cropped out our logo from the fragment. Instead of crediting our work, it fully removed the attribution to the Kyiv Independent. That isn’t citation or fair use. Our team member did what is standard when your content is used this way on YouTube: They filed a copyright report. YouTube reviewed the case and removed the video. We follow the same process whenever our work is used without permission, regardless of who the creator is. Worth noting that a removal like this doesn’t kill the creator’s work: The video can simply be re-uploaded without the copyrighted material. So I was surprised that Caolan instead chose to publicly attack the journalists whose work he lifted, and to appeal to journalistic solidarity in a case where he didn’t demonstrate any. Our team has been reporting on the ground in Ukraine since before the full-scale invasion. We’re independent, funded mostly by our readers, and we earn every dime. We’re very proud of our work, from front-line reporting to war crimes investigations. We respect the work of other journalists and expect the same for ours. I wish Caolan all the best in telling his audience about Ukraine. If he ever wants to use our work, he’s welcome to ask, like anyone else. We are all on the same side when it comes to this: We want as many voices as possible telling the world about Ukraine. But being on the same side means respecting and crediting each other’s work. Credit matters because the reporting everyone draws on has to come from somewhere. Thank you.

After every horrific russian terrorist attack, I can't stop thinking about the tiny, ordinary details of people's lives. The little things that mattered just minutes before russia's genocidal war took those lives away. Someone's orange backpack, with a bottle of water tucked into the side pocket, on the railway platform in Dnipro. A sandwich packed with love, lying beside a lifeless body on a railway platform in the Brovary region. Little children riding a merry-go-round at a playground in Kryvyi Rih, just half an hour before the russian ballistic missile strike against a residential area. The video was filmed by the mother of a little girl who was wounded but survived. 21 others were killed. A baby's tiny hand, with those chubby fingers. Fingers her mother had probably kissed goodnight so many times. I saw that little hand in the video from the funeral of that baby and her mother after russia killed them in the public park on the very day Trump said russia had been fine on Ukraine. A pair of brand-new blue sneakers on a little boy whom russian invaders shot dead with a machine gun alongside his entire family as they tried to evacuate in March 2022. Years pass, but I just can't get these details out of my head. They will haunt me forever. But they also make all those stories so personal. All those little things that were part of someone's ordinary life. Until terrorussia came to destroy them. russia is cancer. No, we still don't hate russia enough.

“I love you. It is always so.” These are the closing lines of this year’s National Unity Dictation, written by Artur Dron, a writer and veteran. @tca1_ , editor-in-chief of Ukraïner International, and French-Ukrainian translator @AudonnetAlexis wrote it this year as well.

On May 8, 1945, Europe declared victory in WWII. But not all of the victorious armies brought freedom or liberation. On this Victory Day, we remember not only victory. We also remember those for whom the end of World War II meant life under a different totalitarian regime.

«У цей день пам’яті згадаймо не лише перемогу». 81 рік тому завершилася Друга світова війна. Тоді вдалося перемогти нацизм, але ще один режим продовжив існувати — Україна була окупована совєтами. Як цей день памʼяті безпосередньо повʼязаний із сучасними подіями — розповідає правозахисник, головний редактор Ukraїner International Крістофер Етвуд.

Well-meaning supporters of labor rights sometimes thoughtlessly share Soviet imagery or praise the Soviet Union. This positive perception is often rooted in a romanticized, theoretical concept of the USSR. We explain why the Soviet Union was actually opposed to labor rights.

russia's ongoing attempts to exterminate the Ukrainian nation is genocide. The world has a legal and moral obligation to stop genocide.

Hey @sethmeyers — I don’t know who wrote this line for you, but it sounds deeply ignorant and embarrassing. Odesa is a Ukrainian city that Russia has been relentlessly attacking for four years, killing civilians and destroying its heritage. Do better.

The Genocide Convention prohibits “deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part.” If these are not conditions to bring about physical destruction, what is?

25h of train travel w 8h of delays — and I'm finally home. For me, the hardest massive air raids are the ones when I'm away on a work trip and my dearest are home. That's when any illusion of control disappears, and all you can do is helplessly refresh the news feed through the entire night. Preparing for cold and darkness, our energy angels gave me an unexpected gift by restoring heating in my area. They are struggling non-stop to warm all residents across the city and region. Today it's −11°C/−16°C, with repairs complicated by snow and ice. Power outages remain heavy and widespread almost everywhere. Please, please — you can help our energy Giants by donating to protect Ukraine's sky, so less russian air shit hit our energy facilities. As always, I'm asking you to support Sky Rusoriz. Every euro and dollar counts and matters. Stay warm and safe.

“Dear Venezuelans, don’t be fooled, US is not your fr…” JUST SHUT THE FUCK UP. Do you really think everyone’s dumb and only you possess the ultimate truth? If you had to go through a fraction of what people you are trying to patronise went through, you wouldn’t make it for a day

New mass graves of unidentified people are appearing in Mariupol. A new wave of exhumations is linked to russia's ongoing housing construction — meant to accommodate illegal settlers brought into the city. Also, the mortality rate in Mariupol is high too. It terrifies me to realise that we may never be able to trace every russian war crime, every life lost in Mariupol. How many people are not laid to rest with dignity? Never forget what russia has done to Mariupol. There will be no peace without justice. Though I feel that repeating this is screaming into the void, but we owe them to defend the truth. Ukrainian Christmas traditions in the area around Bakhmut, Donetsk region, were documented in photographs as early as 120 years ago. For decades, this land has endured waves of oppression imposed by the Kremlin – yet local communities preserved the spirit across generations. Moscow has long sought to erase Ukrainians: through artificial famines, repression, cultural bans, and genocide. After Russia’s invasion, countless people were driven from their homes, while cities and villages were reduced to rubble. What Moscow failed to destroy through policies of erasure, it now seeks to annihilate with missiles, drones, and artillery – as it did to Bakhmut and surrounding communities. This war is genocidal in its intent. Russia is waging it against the very existence of Ukrainians – their culture, traditions, and right to live as Ukrainians on their own land. To resist this war means not only to defend the present. It is to protect memory, heritage, and identity for future generations of Ukrainians to inherit. 📷 Photos: “Step” Folklore and Ethnography Lab of the Donetsk region (1905), Donetsk Regional State Administration (2019), Kostiantyn Liberov and Vlada Liberova (2023)
