Happy New Year, Node.js builders! 🎉
On this January 1, 2026, I'm releasing Vajra — my gift to the indie community and a reminder that performance doesn't have to be sacrificed for usability.
Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears;
I come not to bury Express, but to say we don't bury performance at the altar of usability. ⚡

Prediction: within 12 months, top three models will be open source.
Economic winners will be the American clouds that serve them:
Nebius
Iren
Baseten
Together
Fireworks
Looks like today may be a record day for token volume % of open models on Vercel AI Gateway:
🟦 Open 78.4% 🟨 Closed 21.6%
While spend 💲 usually tells a different story, #3 and #4 today are Moonshot AI & DeepSeek. Adding Z.ai, their combined spend surpasses OpenAI (#2).
(Do note that's the spend for inference of the model across providers (mostly in the US), not revenue going directly to the open weight labs.)
What difference? Maira pochu

In 2018, I visited Rohingya bastis in Jammu
An intelligence (IB) officer told me he had recorded 1,548 Rohingya families living in the region by then
I asked one Rohingya, 60-year-old Sayed Hussain, how he ended up in faraway Jammu after crossing the border in West Bengal. “I boarded the first train I saw [at Kolkata station]. It was noon. The journey ended at Jammu," he said
Hussain said he was among the first Rohingya to have settled in Jammu’s Bhatindi area 10 years earlier
Another Rohingya, 27-year-old Mohammed Tahir, also gave the same reason
Later, the IB officer laughed at this explanation. Told me, “By all accounts, they boarded the Sealdah Express that crosses Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Punjab before reaching Jammu. It’s an arduous two-day journey. Why did they not get down at any of the stations in between?”
There is a syndicate active in Kolkata that has facilitated Rohingya migration to Jammu for years. They tell the Rohingya that the only Muslim-majority state in India is their "natural home"
Ironically, most settle in Hindu-majority Jammu and not Muslim-majority Kashmir. The officer showed me figures on how Rohingya are scattered over 42 sites across Jammu, meaning they are being settled all over the region, and many Army camps were now surrounded by them
In 2015, Abdur Rehman al Arkani, a Jihadi killed by security forces in south Kashmir, was from Rakhine from Myanmar. He went by pseudonym “Chota Burmi”
Role of several Rohingya men in helping Pakistani Jihadis trespass Jammu border had surfaced by then. They are considered experts in infiltration as they are deft in cutting the fence, know tunneling, and are skilled in camouflage. Plus, they have a victimhood narrative of being wronged by qafirs - the Buddhists of Myanmar
In Jammu's Bhatinda are I visited, it was a surprise how quickly they had flourished, as if being pampered and nurtured. An entire lane of shops was called "Burmi market". Most dry fruits factories were employing Rohingya women for cracking walnuts
Local Hindus told me how these infiltrators had bigger and better stocked shops than them, who had lived here for generations
The officer told me how using the UNHCR cards, which have no legal status or validity in India, Rohingya have obtained Aadhaar cards, ration cards and, in some cases, even permanent resident certificate (PRC) cards, all through fraudulent means
Eight years later, these Rohingya are all still there in Jammu. Apparently the govt is running an anti-encroachment drive these days asking them to clear the areas they have illegally occupied, and some of them have reportedly begun to leave
But the exercise is looking more like a temporary inconvenience for the infiltrators than a serious effort to clear Jammu and India of them.

Agaram 2.5B is out. It's a Tamil-first language model we trained from scratch at @MuraiLabsHQ , our small non-profit lab. As far as we know, it's the first Tamil model trained from scratch that can call tools.
It chats in Tamil, Tanglish and English, translates, and can call tools. We're releasing the base model, chat model and GGUF files under Apache-2.0. You can download it and run it offline on your own laptop.
The first chat model had a four-day public preview. Seeing where it fell short with real users helped us decide what to work on. We rebuilt the fine-tuning around what we saw, using 222,662 records.
Thank you to everyone who spent time with that early version.
The video walks through the model. You can try it here:

the moat is a founder with childhood trauma and a constant, debilitating fear of not achieving their potential.
Tweaked it a bit. Created an openapi spec from the existing APIs.
UI session takes in dictated notes, implements, updates its documentation, updates the openapi spec.
Another change is cross-session messaging; asks the api session to implement the delta.
And both have my script to auto deploy. So I dictate once, live in a few minutes.
Replying to @WisprFlow
@WisprFlow has been an absolute value unlock.
And given the late latif that I generally am, as I mentioned, I set up a neat little harness today.
The dashboard that I'm building has three agents right now:The frontend agent scaffolds the UI, generates the contract, and writes it into a shared features.md.
The backend agent for the dashboard picks up the feature API contracts and implements it.
A third agent that is an admin-facing development flow picks up from the same file and starts building its own version of the UI for the admin view and writes back into the same features.md
What has been a compounding or an exponential value unlock is a 10-line Bash script that allows me to have continuous deployment of the changes to my server, which is my own CI.
Every time I talk to the agents, they build, they commit, and they update the Markdown. Once there is a commit, it gets deployed, and I get a notification. I just go and check the new UI.
Especially absolutely useful, given my student's elbow. My elbow is thanking me a whole lot now.
