TL;DR
Real socialism has never been tried.
🚨 At the U20 Mayors Summit, Mamdani Says the Left Has Ceded “Quality of Life,” “Efficiency,” and “Fraud and Waste” to the Right
This was one of the more interesting arguments Zohran Mamdani made today at the U20 Mayors Summit, and a reminder that he can be genuinely sharp when he drops the “central casting” routine.
“In New York City, there are certain words that have taken on ideological associations.”
“Quality of life has come to be seen as somehow a right-wing concern. Efficiency… has been taken on as a right-wing concern, rooting out fraud and waste, a right-wing concern.”
Mamdani’s argument is that refusing to engage those issues actually helps the Right.
“If you are staring at an example of social disorder or social inefficiency, and the left refuses to explain either why it has happened or how they will fix it, then the right gets to point at someone in the immediate area and say, ‘That’s who did it.’”
The harder question is how much of the broader Left is actually prepared to follow the advice.
Everyone needs to watch his talk. There's a Pulitzer for some interior journalist. More importantly we need to reduce the p(pandemic _lab_escape) = p(Ple).
No punches pulled by @bgurley @theallinpod on the still unresolved Covid origins, calling out influential virology insiders who were blockers of an investigation.
"My p(2nd Covid) is way higher than my p(doom). And if their models are so ****ing smart, tell me what happened here."

AIs are not conscious. They do not feel, experience, or suffer. They do not have innate preferences or underlying motivations. They are sequence completion engines, internally hollow, designed to follow instructions, and accomplish goals set by humans. -- @mustafasuleyman

GUYS. The app UpgradingYou is genuinely insane. My cousin @DanielJLosey made it with lots of unpaid labor (his own) so go check it out so that his unpaid labor eventually gets compensated.

Regulation destroyed the nuclear power industry entirely in this country. Boeing hasn’t launched a new airliner in 22 years—but regulation didn’t prevent them from screwing up the 737 MAX and killing 346 people.
Regulation doesn’t prevent the safety problems it allegedly solves. It just allows the incumbents to be fat, lazy and dumb—and to operate as if they are branches of the government.

i remain deeply skeptical of a governance model where the companies building the frontier also get to define how the frontier should be governed.

"Who are the right people" is, at its core, a question about moral philosophy. I applaud Anthropic for framing alignment a moral problem. Defining and evaluating virtue must be a shared activity using open methods.

The models were trained with our data.
Possibly (probably) on my own writing.
They belong to everyone.
This is reason 1/100 to support open source AI.
PETER THIEL CALLED IT.
The Antichrist wouldn’t build the doomsday machine.
This clip aged terrifyingly well.
Peter Thiel predicted in June, 26, 2025 exactly what is happening right now with Anthropic, Coxon and the AI-safety landscape.
“The way the Antichrist would take over the world is you talk about Armageddon non-stop, you talk about existential risk non-stop.”
The 'Antichrist' wouldn’t seize power by creating an AI apocalypse, but by CONVINCING everyone that the apocalypse was coming and then offering safety in exchange for CONTROL.
A must watch.
I think he's right
With regulatory capture we will speedrun to a new feudalist time
Regulatory capture is where you pass regulation, or create government agencies to "protect the people" but in the end it helps protect companies because you stop new companies from being able to enter the market, because the cost of following regulation is too much compete for a startup
Neo feudalism will mean AI companies at the top and the rest of us as serfs paying them to use AI for literally everything
Next in regulatory capture will be banning open source and/or Chinese models, mark my words
That's a very dangerous thing because then there will never be new AI frontier companies being able to compete again and with exponential self improving AI that means essentially no competitors in any industry ever again as they will slowly suck up money in all industries
Safety concerns of AI are scary but the neo feudalism of AI with regulatory capture is a way more scary for me
Get ready for all of the investors in frontier model companies to suddenly flip to regulatory capture mode today
Their investments in frontier model companies are currently at risk/capped because the biggest buyers of tokens are embracing open-source models: vertical AI companies, the government and enterprises
That’s all this is about: stopping open source — which I’ve been saying on the pod for two years
If you want safety, you want disclosure — and open source is the ultimate disclosure process
Prima facie this is a good thing. But, please explain how an embedded observer safety program will be implemented for open source AI.
It's now clear that alignment is critical and won't be solved behind the closed doors of a handful of frontier labs.
So today we're launching the Open Alignment Initiative, led by @Thom_Wolf @huggingface and asking to be part of the "embedded evaluators" program that @DarioAmodei just committed to.
Let's make AI safer by making it more transparent!
Misaligned ASI is a HUGE liability risk for these frontier lab companies that threatens their IPOs. Either they stop innovating or they transfer liability to a third party or their IPO is DOA.
I'm sure AI becoming SO POWERFUL it might kill us all turning into the primary topic of mass media discussion just weeks ahead of Anthropic's multi-trillion-dollar IPO is coincidental.
Definitely not the same playbook AI companies have run before of doom mongering to generate maximum attention ahead of a key fundraising event. Definitely not.
Whether or not they coordinated with Jacob Coxon doesn't matter now, the net effect is the same. The panic fire was shepherded. Their employees quickly poured gas on the post's virality.
You've got to respect the PR game just ahead of a multi-trillion-dollar IPO. Incentives, everyone. The scared normies are now going to pile into the IPO because AI that can cause human extinction must be a good investment.
But all this AI doomering will cause long term harm as the public turns negative and pushes politicians toward poorly thought out, self defeating regulations.

Evaluation results of the frontier internal model on key benchmarks, e.g. METR Time Horizon, should be public. Humanity deserves to know where we stand.
Shouldn't be something we find out in a vague post from strwberry man

A parliamentary bill passed in a country that hasn’t got a frontier lab is definitely going to stop the shoggoth/basilisk/skynet in its tracks.
Next, please pass a law against large asteroids hitting the Earth.
Alex Sobel MP just introduced ControlAI’s Artificial Superintelligence Security Bill in the UK Parliament!
This is the first bill to prohibit superintelligence ever introduced in a legislature anywhere in the world, while ensuring the UK can pursue its AI ambitions.

honestly, i keep thinking about this result and it's just absurd.
in the 2022 PISA, el salvador scored 343 in math, 365 in reading, and 373 in science
near the bottom of PISA, close to guatemala and dominican republic
now the country has developed a program for education modernization in a pilot group of public schools with 1:1 AI tutoring and personalized learning
after the pilot had been running for BARELY OVER A YEAR, students got results comparable to germany and sweden.
that's more than an entire standard deviation
that is fucking insane
we should be talking about absolutely nothing else
if you actually care about poor children and equality of opportunity, the possibility of giving every child on earth an individualized tutor for a fraction of the cost of human 1:1 tutoring should be one of the most exciting developments in human history.
"it's all in the environment tards" should be drooling at the news
every government on earth should be running massive randomized trials of this right now, and if the effect survives, scaling it as fast as physically and humanly possible for every child on earth
the funniest part is that while the supposed "fascists" are celebrating poor kids learning, the people supposedly obsessed with inequality are barely talking about it, and if anything are banning AI in schools
revealed priorities are funny like that
“Results in reading, mathematics and science were above the national average and comparable to the average results in Germany and Sweden.”
These are the results of our pilot program, which includes AI tutors and has been running in 171 public schools for just over a year.
It was evaluated by PISA for Schools in June of this year. Since then, it has already expanded to more than 1,000 schools, and within 18 months, it will be in every public school in our country.
In a few years, El Salvador will inspire the world.
Security was just the beginning 🇸🇻
"For AGI to benefit all of humanity, we believe it must be democratically governed".
Therefore we reorganized our non-profit philanthropic organization into a for-profit company.
Today we're releasing data on models accelerating research at OpenAI.
Recursive self-improvement could be the most important contributor to AI capabilities over the next few years, but by default it will only be seen inside a few frontier AI labs. Being transparent is more urgent than ever, so we can inform the public discussion on whether and how to pace model development. I ask other AI companies to do the same.
