Once a country gives away too much of its productive capacity, getting it back is not easy. When companies move production overseas in search of cheaper labour, Canadian communities can lose factories, skilled jobs, investment, and entire supply chains. Once those industries disappear, the skills, infrastructure, and businesses needed to rebuild them can take decades to recover. What may look cheaper in the short term can leave Canada weaker in the long term. The consequences go far beyond lost jobs. Greater dependence on foreign countries for manufacturing, technology, energy, food, and essential goods leaves Canada vulnerable when wars, pandemics, trade disputes, or supply-chain disruptions occur. If Canada cannot produce what it needs, Canadians have less control over their economy and their future. Dependence can turn into vulnerability when the countries we rely on put their own interests first—as they inevitably will. Canada is blessed with enormous natural resources, yet too often we export raw materials and import higher-value finished products. That means other countries capture the manufacturing, investment, innovation, and jobs that could have been created here. Canada risks becoming a country that supplies the world with its resources while buying back the finished products at a higher price. There is also a generational cost. When productive industries disappear, young Canadians inherit fewer opportunities to build careers in manufacturing, skilled trades, engineering, and other industries that create lasting economic value. Communities built around those industries can decline, businesses can close, and economic opportunities can become concentrated in fewer places. Reversing that damage is far harder than preventing it in the first place. Canada does not need to isolate itself from the world. Trade is important, and international cooperation can benefit Canadians. But Canada should never confuse global integration with economic security or dependence with prosperity. We should trade with the world while maintaining the ability to produce essential goods, develop our resources, build strategic industries, and protect the economic foundations of our country. Trade with the world, but build at home. Produce what matters. Process our resources here. Protect critical industries. Keep Canadian skills, investment, innovation, and value in Canada. Because once a country gives away too much of its productive capacity, getting it back is not easy. Factories can close, workers can leave industries, supply chains can disappear, and generations can pass before that capacity is rebuilt. The consequences of excessive dependence are not always immediate—but when the next crisis comes, the weakness can become impossible to ignore. It should be to make sure Canada is strong enough that it never has to depend on the world simply to survive.
