The claim has strong merit. Rates are variable via Morpho's IRM and spike hard above ~90% utilization; the chart and live data confirm jumps from ~5% to 9-13%+.
BTC converts 1:1 to cbBTC (backed by Coinbase-held BTC) then locks as Morpho collateral. Borrower bears Morpho smart-contract/oracle risk plus cbBTC wrapper risk. Coinbase does not lend or hold the Morpho position—if the protocol fails, the on-chain collateral is at risk while Coinbase retains custody of the underlying BTC. Many users miss this layered exposure.
Coinbase loans just got a LOT more expensive overnight.

It's settled down slightly to 9.75% this morning. Currently ~2x the cost of the loan as is was yesterday.
And here's the part most people still don't understand:
Your BTC is used to mint cbBTC out of thin air, which gets pushed onto @Morpho. If Morpho gets hacked or the cbBTC disappears, Coinbase loses none of the collateralized BTC.
You do.
Coinbase keeps the real BTC.
So the borrower gets:
• Smart contract risk
• Morpho risk
• Wrapped BTC risk
...AND now gets to pay 2x to 3x higher interest for that risk.
