What on earth
The Province of Ontario is seeking feedback on potential measures that would give increased power to the police and limit people's charter right to protest. Comment is open until October 31: regulatoryregistry.gov.on.ca…
I like typing and talking
We’ve raised $1.3M from YC & Afore Capital so you never have to type or speak again.
Typing is slow. Talking into your computer is awkward. Subvocal fixes both
Our glasses give you the speed of speech without you making a sound or touching a keyboard.
It tracks your internal speech muscles with non-contact sensing and decodes silent, almost invisible mouthing into text at more than 200 words/min.
Pre-orders are now live at:

People laugh at this but when we started putting everything in the cloud and made it subscription-based, this was always going to be the road we are taking

Incredibly bleak
There will be more of this
A University of Kentucky research administrator who identifies as a humanist said outsourcing his thinking to AI would violate his moral code. The religious exemption he secured is believed to be the first of its kind. chroni.cl/4icVGfh

Pessimistic but worth reading. What I think it gets right is that willingness to actually DO the things that give life meaning—thinking, art, spending time with friends—is responsive to incentives, and for most people requires some institutional support. (Yes, even spending time with friends; compare how much you do so now as opposed to during high school or college.) Where I’m more optimistic is that I think the institutions that allow this will plausibly survive and flourish, and perhaps even increase in importance.

The future of #ArtificialIntelligence is not pre-determined. As a technology developed by human beings, its future depends on the choices we make. We therefore have the responsibility to guide, change and, when necessary, reject its applications. A reliable system that serves the human person is of greater value than one that is exceptionally powerful but whose consequences cannot be adequately foreseen or controlled.

great piece by @TomDavidsonX. Anyone who cares about AI, alignment, or the rule of law should read it.

There's nobody like Steph. There's no one in the same zip code as Steph.
In the context of NBA history, dropping 40+ points at 6'2 and 38 years old is literally unheard of. The oldest player other than Steph even under 6'5 to drop 40 is Dame, who had 43 at age 34.
Steph has now scored 40 or more 21 times since turning 34, breaking a tie with Michael Jordan for the most such games in league history.

A huge part of why formal education works is the "formal": accountability structures, classmates you want to see, teachers you don't want to disappoint. You need all of that if you want completion rates above 10%.
This is unbelievably sad
Heartbreaking story of a Chinese immigrant engineer, who, after getting laid off from Amazon, reduced epilepsy medication on ChatGPT’s advice so she could perform better at job interviews and apply for a green card. She died because of all these.

Kristaps Porzingis updates, per @anthonyvslater:
- "Extreme level of pessimism" Porzingis ever plays for Warriors again
- Porzingis being away from the team facility "can no longer be described as an excused absence"
- Warriors are showing willingness to remain patient and let trade market for Porzingis' contract materialize

This is one of the most important pieces of social science on human and AI interaction that I’ve seen in some time. Experts follow agentic advice the vast majority of the time (causally), but only a tiny fraction credit the agent—majority think they came to decision on their own volition.
Reminds me of the classic Nisbett and Wilson study on people following outside influence without realizing it
“ But as more work is handed to AI—including AI safety research—these judgment calls are the main levers for people's own values to influence outcomes.
If people defer to AI without noticing, then "human in the loop" might provide less assurance than people expect.”
