Interesting to see a Cambridge lecture spark global consensus on Gulf security. On 26 Oct, Oman FM Sayyid Badr called for inclusive Gulf security. A week later, Bahrain FM Al Zayani, Egypt FM Abdelatty and, most significantly, China’s President Xi, have echoed these arguments).
The Middle East and Gulf region should not become a battleground for great-power rivalry and China is willing to work with Arab nations to achieve lasting peace, Chinese President Xi Jinping told Oman's sultan on Monday. reuters.com/world/china/deep…

On the morning of 19 July 1972, around 400 communist insurgents launched a surprise attack on the Omani coastal town of Mirbat, opening up with a mortar bombardment before advancing towards the defenders.
Arrayed against them were just nine soldiers from Britain's Special Air Service (SAS), commanded by Captain Mike Kealy, a contingent of Omani troops, and local fighters. This tiny garrison was outnumbered four to one.

Back in ‘98 is an ode to the historic relationship between Oman and the UK. In 1798 the Anglo-Omani Treaty was signed, this followed a commercial agreement with the British East India Company 150 years earlier. The 1798 Treaty is considered foundational to the relationship of friendship and commerce which continues to this day.

A Bridge to Muscat. I wrote this song in celebration of two interconnected events. First, the opening of an EU permanent mission in Muscat. Second, His Majesty Sultan Haitham's State Visit to the UK next week. Both events reflect a deep friendship between Europe and Oman which, while centuries old, has more geopolitical relevance today than ever.
