Excellent piece by @add about how Alden Capital is killing local journalism and why that matters. “The death of a city’s major journalism outfit isn’t a tragedy only if you’re one of those blessed souls who holds some deep reverence for the fourth estate.” voiceofsandiego.org/2023/10/…

The only bright part of this debacle is Jim Pillen Barbara Streisand effecting many more Nebraskans into reading the stories that raise critical questions about his role in nitrate pollution statewide.
📢 Statement: The Asian American Journalists Association stands with Yanqi Xu, the Flatwater Free Press (@flatwaterfreep) journalist who was the target of remarks that attempted to dismiss her reporting because of her country of origin. 🧵

Damn… is Nebraska really the most racist state in the US? The Governor said, “The author is from communist China. What more do you need to know?” because she pointed out his hog farms are polluting water. – at Denver, CO
Yanqi Xu didn't deserve a damn bit of this from Nebraska's governor. I'm struck that Yanqi - rather than being Chinese & "what more do you need to know" as Pillen says below - embodies many of the loftiest ideals American leaders say they hold dear. (1/3) flatwaterfreepress.org/gover…

On this week’s show, we remember Mathew Shepard, a gay UW student murdered 25 years ago. We’re doing things differently and have stories from our 10th and 20th anniversary coverage and new reporting from this year. Listen where you get your podcasts or: ow.ly/TZ0P50PU8fW

Painful to read this when financial resources for the teaching-&-learning mission of the university continue to dwindle. The fans’ “comfort”? Their need to be able to go grab a drink? Some of our classes are held in windowless basement rooms with inadequate security measures.

So many traditional media ideas are broken now. If anyone is suggesting a plan based on data from beyond ‘21 they’re full of shit.
Live presidential debates are a relic that society should leave behind - too many scripted lines and unanswered questions, too much shouting and pat anecdotes, and having no frontrunner makes it a farce. Gotta be better ways for ppl to vet candidates. So what’s the alternative?

How are we supposed to square cuts like this, which seem to slice across the entire non-profit media horizon, with the recent wave of stories touting stepped up financial support from foundations? Something doesn't add up.
New York Public Radio, the parent organization of WNYC, is cutting its staff by about 12%, according to a note to staff from President and CEO LaFontaine Oliver
