Despite the picture in everyone’s mind of an Irish caddie, rosy face weathered from the wind and sun, with an intelligible accent and a joke or quip for every scenario, it was fun to have such a young guy carrying my bag. Ralph had grown up on the course. That alone felt important. He knew the greens the way you know a familiar room in the dark. He had an easy confidence when it came to the little decisions, when to let the ball run, when the wind would steal half a club, when the ground would do something unexpected. Those things matter here. Lahinch doesn’t announce its difficulty loudly; it just waits for you to underestimate it.
